Soroptimist Report: 13 scholarships and awards given at annual luncheon

Soroptimists of Ashland distributed scholarships and supportive monetary awards to 13 local female students at their first in-person annual luncheon after two years of cancellations. Several winners are mothers, several are the first in their family to graduate high school or attend college. Some recipients are women of color or the daughter of immigrant parents. All awardees are exceptional women with drive, dedication, intelligence and talent, the club reports.

The audience of about 300 people gathered Sunday at Butler Bandshell in Lithia Park for the Ashland World Music Festival’s main event were thrilled by what they saw and heard. As far as the audience was concerned, the weather — about 60 degrees — was warm, the music was beautiful, and the time was right for people to come together again.

A series of six workshops about three plays by William Shakespeare are being offered with Barry Kraft, a long-time actor with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and noted Shakespearean scholar. Sessions will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays starting June 4.

American Legion Post 14 of Ashland, in conjunction with Scout Troops 112 and 8112, will host the annual Memorial Day Observance at Mountain View Cemetery starting at 11 a.m. Monday, May 30. Patriotic music will be provided by the Ashland Brass Band.

Stefani Seffinger won’t seek third term on City Council

Ashland City Councilor Stefani Seffinger will not seek a third term on the council, she announced Saturday, a week after successful surgery to remove a melanoma. She intends “to continue to serve the last months of my term with dedication,” she said in a statement circulated to city staff members and posted on her Facebook page.

The Ashland Run: A Memorial Day weekend tradition

The 49th Ashland Run takes off Saturday morning, May 28. The start and finish is near the corner of Hargadine and Fork streets, just up from the outdoor Allen Elizabethan Theatre. Registration is at 8 a.m., and the race starts at 8:30 a.m. There’s no charge to take part.
