Invasive crayfish found in Ashland Canal

Northern crayfish, which can negatively impact other fish populations, were found in the Ashland canal, according to state Fish and Wildlife officials, the first such discovery in the state. The species is native to the Midwest. Officials said, “This discovery could be bad news for Oregon’s native signal crayfish — northern crayfish are much more aggressive.”

‘Bans Off Our Bodies’ march set for Saturday in Ashland

A march is set to start from the Ashland Public Library at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, and head north for four blocks up East Main Street sidewalks to the Ashland Plaza for a “Bans Off Our Bodies” rally decrying a draft Supreme Court decision leaked last week that, if finalized, would overturn the 1970 court decision that recognized a pregnant woman’s right to make a choice whether to have an abortion.

Three-alarm fire damages building on Ashland Plaza

A building on Ashland Plaza suffered significant damage Wednesday afternoon from a fire of unknown origin that didn’t cause any human injuries, but destroyed the home of a longtime Ashland couple and claimed the life of one cat while sparing another. The fire caused “significant damage” to two residences and three offices on the upper floors, while the ground floor shop and restaurant suffered smoke and water damage.

Southern Oregon University is looking for ways to smooth out access for students in the southern Oregon region. Ashland and Medford school districts signed an intergovernmental agreement with SOU in the past week to share basic “directory information” about high school students to help the university reach out to them about enrollment opportunities.
