Father set to run 100 miles in honor of his daughter’s memory — and to help others

“My daughter suffered for 21 days in the hospital. I can suffer for 30 hours in the wilderness, running in her memory.” That’s what Tim Smith, a pharmacist at Asante Ashland Community Hospital, says about his plan to run 100 miles through the Siskiyous six years after the passing of 11-year-old Kharma Smith in 2019 and days before what would have been her 18th birthday, Sept. 28.

Live music by Salsa Brava, free dance lessons featured at fundraiser Saturday night

The Amigo Club of Ashland hosts a community fundraiser in support of the upcoming 60th anniversary of the Ashland–Guanajuato, Mexico, sister city relationship on Saturday, Aug. 16, at The Historic Ashland Armory. The evening will feature live music by Salsa Brava, free dance lessons, and a selection of tapas and beverages, with proceeds supporting people-to-people cultural exchange between the two cities.

Phoenix-Talent School District to distribute free school supplies Aug. 23

Through a partnership with Jackson Care Connect, Phoenix-Talent School District is hosting its first Healthy Start Block Party at Phoenix High School from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23. The free community fair will offer a wide range of free resources to local students and their families, including from Talent and Ashland.
