A handful of Ashland’s streets will experience short closures this week due to road maintenance projects, according to a release from the city of Ashland. Glenview Drive between Granite Street and Hillcrest Street and Almond Street between Manzanita Street and Church Street will close at some time on Wednesday, July 31, and Thursday, Aug. 1.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is in need of volunteer K-9 handlers and qualified dogs to join its Search and Rescue team. Training and certification take around 18 months to complete, with training sessions twice a week. Dogs and their handlers must be on call most hours of the day.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed whitebark pine as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act in 2023. It lives at the ecological edge, only at the very top of the mountains it inhabits, at timberline and above 7,500 feet elevation. It is a slow-growing, charismatic species that is often sculpted by the harsh conditions in which it lives.

An art exhibit featuring the paintings of Robert Perillat, who was one of America’s major contemporary artists, is on display at The Portal art gallery at 88 North Main St. in downtown Ashland. Perillat died in 1991 after four decades of producing hundreds of works.

It may still be summer but the Mt. Ashland Ski Area is moving forward with an ambitious fundraising campaign to provide new and improved conditions for skiers and snowboarders this winter. In gearing up for the 2024-25 season, ski area managers have launched efforts to raise $500,000 to provide new and expanded terrain and upgrade the mountain’s night lighting.

Ashland’s bicycling infrastructure recently got an upgrade — four bright green ‘bike boxes’ were recently installed at the intersection of Ashland Street and Walker Avenue. These highly-visible paint markings position bicycles ahead of traffic during red lights, enhancing their visibility and making intersections safer for pedestrians and cyclists alike.
