Former record company executive turned publishing executive Rick Bleiweiss has found a third career as an author. The Ashland resident will read from his second Pignon Scorbion novel, “Murder in Haxford,” at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at Bloomsbury Books in Ashland.
Ashland City Councilor Shaun Moran announced his resignation from the council Tuesday, the day after Mayor Julie Akins said she would step down effective Friday. Moran’s letter, sent about noon Tuesday, said his resignation is effective immediately.
Ashland Mayor Julie Akins will leave office at the end of the week, she announced in a resignation letter emailed to City Manager Joe Lessard and City Council members at about 8:30 a.m. Monday. She does not cite a reason for her departure two years in to a four-year term as mayor, other than to say, “for me, it’s time.”
The American Association of University Women’s Ashland, Oregon branch will host a panel for three Ashland city councilors — including two newly elected ones — from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 28, at First United Methodist Church’s Wesley Hall, 175 N. Main St., Ashland.

The Ashland City Council has directed staff to identify a location for a new emergency shelter to house people in need during severe weather or similar disasters. The city is working with a $1 million state grant to purchase or lease property that could be used during extreme heat, cold or smoke conditions, as well as during sudden emergencies such as wildfires.

The news vacuum left by the abrupt closure of the Medford Mail Tribune last week is about to be filled by the parent company of The Bulletin in Bend. Within two weeks, Oregon-based EO Media Group plans to launch “The Tribune,” which will offer Jackson County residents a print newspaper three times a week, curated from postings on its website.
