Letter: ‘1,000 community members volunteered’

January 22, 2023

I want to share positive news.

I am a volunteer with Ashland Parks and Recreation (APRC) and want to highlight how much a community of volunteers, working together with APRC staff, contributes to our beloved city.

Did you know that 1,000 community members volunteered with APRC in 2022? They donated 9,500 hours to teach classes, clean up parks, help run community events, and so much more. North Mountain Park Nature Center alone coordinates 111 dedicated volunteers to care for its gardens, wildlife habitat, nature playground and many special projects.

The volunteers involved represent all ages, from elementary school students to many older adults. I’m not suggesting that staff aren’t critical in providing wonderful parks and recreational opportunities. In fact, these staff have worked tirelessly, with reduced resources, to maintain high-quality facilities and services; they deserve our acknowledgement and appreciation. And they do so in conjunction with committed volunteers.

It is a wonderful partnership that brings us together to make our community better for all. But it’s not something we can take for granted. So let’s keep our quality of life and great services a priority and continue to work together for the good of all!
