The owners of a new experiential retail store say they aim to bring a little bit of peace, mindfulness, heartfulness and a little “slice of heaven” to downtown Ashland — mixing in some extraordinary and magical elements, while providing a new community gathering space for events and classes.
As part of a panel discussion Tuesday hosted by the Urban League of Portland on the Southern Oregon University campus and live streamed to remote viewers, the head of the Urban League of Portland reflected on the murder of Black 19-year-old Ashland teen Aidan Ellison nearly two years ago, saying “many in the community want more conversations to be taking place about why, how, and what happens next.”
The rise of white nationalism in the state of Oregon and its impact on Southern Oregon will be the theme of a community conversation from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, in Ashland, the Urban League of Portland has announced. Panelists will also honor “community champions who are doing dynamic work to advance the movement forward,” according to an event announcement.
After three years of meeting virtually, flesh and blood representatives of Southern Oregon University descended on the city of Guanajuato during the first week of August. University President Rick Bailey and a small team from the institution spent several days meeting with university and city officials and friends in Guanajuato, revitalizing the sister-university and sister-city relationship after more than two years of COVID-19 precautions.
An Ashland man is facing a Measure 11 robbery charge after what a police report indicates was a shoplifting-gone-wrong incident at a local grocery store earlier this month. Police say they found a loaded weapon on the man, who was confronted by a store employee after leaving Market of Choice.

After a long pandemic hiatus, the Rogue Valley Peace Choir will launch its 20th anniversary season with a rehearsal Sept. 8 in Ashland. A pre-season party and potluck is set for Thursday, Sept. 1, in Lithia Park. Singers wanting to know more about the group can connect with choir members, join in singing a few tunes, and generally eat, drink and be merry.

After a successful production of “The Vagina Monologues” and raising more than $2,000 for Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Oregon, Ashland actor and director Lia Dugal intends for “The Climate Monologues” to premiere in Oregon in late 2025 or early 2026 at the Bellview Grange in Ashland.
