An air quality alert due to smoke from the Rum Creek Fire burning northwest of Grants Pass continues through 5 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. Moderate to heavy smoke is expected over Jackson, Josephine and Curry counties at least through Thursday.

A body was found in Calle Guanajuato Park near the corner of Granite Street and High Street on Saturday morning, the Ashland Police Department has announced. The decedent appeared to be an unhoused person who had passed away several days prior to Aug. 27, the report said.

The block on North Main Street between Laurel and Manzanita streets has been associated with education in Ashland for 150 years, since the Rev. Skidmore first started a college called “The Academy” in 1872. Briscoe Elementary was dedicated in 1949 and closed in 2004. The school is now owned by the city and leased to the Oregon Child Development Coalition.
