He and a colleague were each feeling low until spiritual work lifted them up

By Moshe Ross

You are here you are here you are here

You are here

O what’s inside of me?

Can we be nearer than side by side?

The wave’s swell passes from water to water

We each feel each

            nomads monads of electricity

Who is perfect?

We sink or swim altogether

Suck out our mutual taints

Fold in descrying sight

This week, I sank very low. I talked with a colleague, and he felt that he was in an endless despair. And he had a distasteful puffy welt on his inner forearm. This all made me feel like the ruins of an old abandoned house — all from want of God contact.

The next morning, I woke up and felt: God is here. Then my colleague called. We did spiritual work together, and then he said that the welt had flattened down and was now just a pink area.

Part of the miracle here is that I didn’t know how he was feeling. I woke up feeling God’s Presence, and meanwhile he was feeling it too, not through any human suggestion, “nearer than side by side.” The wave’s swell, the trough as well as the crest of the wave, passes from water to water; we each feel each. Thus a suggestion can drag us down or lift us up, although the upliftment really lies within our own divine self, ready to break through.

It is love’s gravity that keeps the planets in harmony and draws us in collectively. We are God’s transcendent life. As we feel this, we are liquified within it. We are as secure and defenseless as a babe in arms. There is a congregating, all symbolic, all analogous poetry to what happens within myself, for God within me is here and here and here, composing such a world of continuously variegated illumination.

God’s choiceless choice

God is the perfect Beyond-form, the Beingness Who is likewise eternal Nothingness (and Who therefore does not have to be born). Then in the free course of Its own nature, which paradoxically is Its necessary choiceless choice, It emerges from our Milk Ocean, forms individual Being where at first we feel cast away, only to reach the revelation of holy oneness, where with a compassionate heart we incorporate our past injuries and deaths. Here we return in the crescendo of greater and greater love.

Overarching rhythm

However wild the spread of things, it is in a kinetic balance. In God Contact, we are resting, and those we love are lifted up, first subconsciously, where the greater part of our being is. We arrive on the river of our embodied dreams, for this is all a vision. God is consciousness, living love is all. At first, we are wary that we are stepping upon shifting tiles that are only and purely levels of awareness. Then we grow confident in this visionary nature of all things, where nothing is a mere “thing” anymore, but is Prasad, the bread and wine, communion with the sacred.

All directions are directions home. All steps in our process are swim strokes, an elongated flowing unity. The Divine is giving and receptive at once, for It is me and it is Itself. God is the glassy break and the fusion. It is all the strength; any blow meant for harm becomes the tender shaping of the potter, around and within the hollow of the spinning rising bowl.
