Love: What it is and how we can experience it

By Jim Hatton

What we are all searching for is Love.

Jim Hatton

There are countless definitions and uses of the word “love”, yet when asked, many find it hard to give a definitive explanation. A typical response might be: “I know what love is, but I can’t really tell you what it is.”

Here is my definition: Love is what is created when God-Source sees itself within its own creation.

Some call it the love of God, or God’s love for humankind. The closest earthly feeling to this is the joy we experience when giving a gift — much like giving a present to a child during the holidays. Love contains a profound sense of giving. God-Source gives life (consciousness) to its creation — us.

Many have said that when we are in the nonphysical realm (before our physical birth), there is a profound sense of Oneness, Peace and Love. There is no time, distance or space; whatever we become aware of is instantly created.

When we step into this physical expression (birth), we bring with us an overwhelming sense of Oneness and Love. It is no wonder that humans are so deeply drawn to newborn children — we can feel the presence of Oneness and Love within them.

Newborns also carry a natural sense of this Oneness. Yet as they are indoctrinated into a world defined by time, distance, space and society, this sense often fades, leaving them with a feeling of separation.

This explains why, as physical beings, we are always seeking to reconnect with the experience of Oneness and Love.

In the physical realm, our process of creation is not instantaneous; it unfolds over time. Many of us do not fully understand this creative process in a world of time and space, and so we grow impatient while waiting for our desires to manifest.

Ultimately, what we are all longing for is to reawaken our sense of unconditional Love.

We may catch glimpses of this unconditional Love through:

  • Gift-giving (as mentioned earlier)
  • Holidays such as Valentine’s Day (though often commercialized and superficial)
  • Romance
  • Sexual intimacy
  • Prayer and devotion
  • Spiritual practices
  • Time in nature
  • Music

Inner Peace: The wave’s swell

Moshe Ross: The wave’s swell, the trough as well as the crest of the wave, passes from water to water; we each feel each. Thus a suggestion can drag us down or lift us up, although the upliftment really lies within our own divine self, ready to break through.
