Ashland shelter open house meets with mixed reviews

The doors of the 2200 Ashland St. shelter opened to the public for the first time and met with a reception of cautious optimism and lingering worry. The Wednesday evening open house was attended by neighbors, curious residents, homeless advocates and staff from the shelter’s operator, the nonprofit organization Options for Housing and Rental Assistance (OHRA). Ashland city staff members, councilors and Mayor Tonya Graham were available to answer questions.

Council approves $200K contract for shelter operation

On a 4-2 vote, the Ashland City Council on Tuesday approved a contract with a nonprofit organization to operate a new shelter at 2200 Ashland St. Options for Housing Resources and Assistance (OHRA) has agreed to operate the 30-bed shelter for 71 days of 24/7 staffing at a cost of no more than $200,000.

Cocaine, fentanyl use on the rise at Ashland High School

Since Ashland school administrators have noticed an uptick in cocaine and fentanyl use, Ashland High School will host a gathering Thursday open to the community intended to inform students and parents of the dangers involved. “Substance Use Awareness Night” is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at Mountain Avenue Theatre, 201 S. Mountain Ave., at Ashland High.
