Open house kicks off ‘A Season of Nonviolence’ series of events
Peace House will commemorate its 40th year as a peace and justice center in the Rogue Valley Thursday, June 22, with a celebration that is free and open to the public. The event will review the organization’s dynamic history working on human rights, alternatives to war and violence, and long-term commitment to root out racism, sexism and homophobia, locally and as a part of campaigns, according to the event announcement.
“We are thrilled to open our house to the community to celebrate four decades of work in the pursuit of peace and justice with this event,” said Elizabeth V. Hallett, Peace House executive director. “We hope you will connect with old friends, reminisce and share your stories about working with Peace House for human rights and justice, as well as nonviolent alternatives to war. If you are new to Peace House activities, we welcome you to get more acquainted.”
The 40th anniversary party will launch “A Season of Nonviolence” — a series of events designed to bring people together to inspire actions to address the huge U.S. military budget and reduce nuclear threats, as well as to learn about alternatives to racial, political, environmental and military violence. Over the next several months, the Season of Nonviolence will include speakers, three reading groups, a nonviolent communication training, and actions guided by the newly formed Prevent War Coalition.
Working with Peace House on the project will be Southern Oregon Pachamama, One Sunny Day Initiatives and other allies.
Details about Season of Nonviolence activities through 2023 will be posted on the Peace House website at peacehouse.net and in the calendar of events included in the weekly Peace House e-newsletter, Clear Action News (sign up for free delivery on the Peace House homepage, lower right corner).
Peace House says anyone interested in aligning with Peace House “for a culture of nonviolence that supports a sustainable Planet and all living things are invited to amplify and collaborate with Peace House in this effort.”
Peace House leadership personnel for Uncle Foods Diner, Rogue Liberation Library and the Prevent War Coalition will be available at this 40th year celebration to discuss volunteer and campaign opportunities for everyone interested.
A casual Middle Eastern menu of snacks will accompany live music by jazz pianist Adam Shrubbe and a Social Justice Art Exhibit by Betty LaDuke.
