1938 — 2023

Francis “Frank” Hayes passed away at Celia’s House in Medford on Friday, Dec. 15, 2023. His kindness, helpfulness, and his wonderful personality will be missed by his many friends and relatives.

Frank was born in Illinois. At the age of 9 he went to live with his sister, Geraldine Windt, and her husband, Frank.  He was like a big brother to his 11 nieces and nephews.

After high school he joined The Alexian Brothers, a nursing order founded in Germany. His birth family moved to California and when he left the Alexians he too moved to California and worked as a psychiatric nurse at Stanford University Hospital.

In 1979 he began a longtime association with Jean Houston and Robert Masters, and then returned to nursing at Stanford in the ’90s. After retiring he built a rammed-earth home in New Mexico. He then moved to Ashland Oregon where he participated in the Center for Sacred Theatre and became a serving member of Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church. He loved doing this and he loved Ashland and his many wonderful friends.

He is survived by nieces Diane Bechtold, Susan Stevens, Debra Dearinger, Geraldine Ellis, Heidi Johnston, Wendy Claypool and Therese Des Jardines; nephews Frank Windt, Michael Windt, Carl Windt, and John Windt, 32 great nieces and nephews, 45 great-great nieces and nephews, and five great-great-great nieces and nephews.

Donations may be made to Celia’s House, a residential hospice in Medford, Oregon.
