Letter: Trump’s disparagement of veterans and the military makes him unacceptable to lead

March 21, 2024

As a veteran, I am deeply disturbed by the attitude of a former president who in his hubris once again desires to be commander in chief. He has repeatedly made disparaging comments about veterans as well as current members of the military. These are a matter of public record and cannot be labeled fake news.

Belittling John McCain for being shot down and captured.

That soldiers who died on D-Day were suckers and losers.

Accepted a Purple Heart from a veteran supporter and jokingly demeaning the significance of that Purple Heart.

Belittling remarks about wounded and damaged Army Capt. Luis Avila.

His disgusting and degrading behavior toward an Army officer amputee while he sang “God bless America” at a military event.

Threatening Gen. Mark Milley with hanging for treason for just doing his job.

His remark to Gen. John Kelly about the dead at Arlington National Cemetery, including Kelly’s son, Robert Kelly, who was killed in action in Afghanistan: “Why would he serve since he had nothing to gain?” “I don’t get it. What was in it for them.”

A remark that he did not want to be seen in the presence of military amputees because it didn’t look good for him.

Used his family money to get out of serving during Vietnam. Cited a fake problem (bone spurs) that doesn’t seem to bother or limit his walking or golf, even as an old man.

I cannot believe that I am the only veteran out there who finds Trump totally unacceptable to serve as commander in chief of our military. He does not deserve my or your respect, support and, most importantly, our vote.

If you are a veteran, please speak out.
