Letter: The attempted assassination of Donald Trump

July 21, 2024

The New York Times: “The Attack on Donald Trump Is Antithetical to America.”

President Joe Biden: “There’s no place for this kind of violence in America.”

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller: “We condemn this attack and all political violence, strongly and unequivocally, just as we condemn political violence in any country.” He spoke of “core values that we share as a nation: a commitment to democracy; a respect for the rule of law.”

Oh really?

Our actual history: Beginning in 1776 with the genocidal Indian wars; then wars and coups in Central and South America, the Caribbean, Southern Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East with the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Now we have Biden and his top advisers supporting Israel’s slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza, the most documented genocide in history. In our 248-year history we have left tens of millions of people dead, injured and displaced in these wars.

Domestic violence has affected millions here. And we have a long legacy of political assassinations: Garfield, McKinley, Lincoln, the Kennedys, Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Violence at home and abroad is not antithetical to America, it has been its very nature since the founding. We will never abolish such violence until we end our ignorance and denial about our nation’s true history — and act together to create a just and peaceful U.S.
