Letter: ‘I thought perhaps they’d seen Hamlet’

June 30, 2022

Regarding the review of “Revenge Song”: From the headline (“An inappropriate, nasty play”), I thought perhaps they’d seen Hamlet.

Or is it acceptable for a white man to plot revenge and destroy a country, but it’s uncomfortable when it’s a woman who seeks to be the hero of her own story and seeks revenge?

I’m always amused when people shriek, “no, revenge isn’t the right way” at women, but it never seems to apply to men, especially white men. And women have much to feel vengeful about right now. There is an instinctual fear in men that women could rise up in rage. And burn it — them — down.

I was just thinking it might be time to return to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. I think I’ll start with this one.
