Letter: Enough is enough — a community call to stand for democracy and fairness

June 13, 2025

Recent events—like the disturbing image of Senator Padilla being manhandled in handcuffs—should shake us all to our core. This wasn’t partisan theater; it was an affront to the dignity of public service and a stark reminder of how fragile our democratic norms have become.

But we are better than despair. We are better than cynicism. We are a community rooted in compassion, dialogue, and collective responsibility. And that’s why this is the moment for every citizen—regardless of party, age, or background—to speak up.

Because our federal taxation and funding system is not working for justice. Blue-state taxpayers contribute the bulk of federal revenue, yet it’s often red states—many of which undermine public trust and democratic institutions—that receive the most federal funding. That’s not just unfair—it’s unsustainable.

We need a new approach—one based on accountability. Just as insurance companies assess risk before issuing coverage, the federal government should implement a formulary system for how tax dollars are distributed. If a state bans books, restricts voting rights, denies science, or flouts basic democratic standards, it should not be rewarded with more funding. Responsibility and respect for democratic norms should be the foundation for federal support.

And let’s be clear—no more picking up the tab for Trump-era tax breaks for billionaires. Progressive citizens and working families here in Oregon shouldn’t be subsidizing giveaways that deepen wealth inequality while draining the national budget.

This is about more than ideology. It’s about protecting the rule of law, ensuring fair funding, and defending the institutions that underpin our way of life. It’s about building a future in which every voice matters, every vote counts, and our community stands firmly united in defense of democratic values.

So let us speak—in letters, in conversations, and in casting our ballots—we must demand bold leadership from elected officials at every level. Let us be the community that says: Enough is enough. Stand up. Speak out. And stay true to the principles that brought us together.

Together, we can be the change we want to see.
