Letter: ‘Completely unacceptable’

November 16, 2022

American Association of University Women (AAUW) was established in 1881. Our mission is to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy.

We condemn racism and any threats or acts of violence or harassment and are committed to fighting for justice. There can be no justice or equality when any individuals or communities are treated with indignity.

Recent incidents have been reported in our community involving persons of color at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Southern Oregon University, the Ashland School District and in the neighborhoods of Ashland. Our neighbors have experienced racist threats, verbal slurs, and foul comments. This is completely unacceptable and strikes at the heart of Ashland and how we see ourselves in the world.

It is our hope that all feel welcomed here and are encouraged to bring their best ideas and talents to our community. Diversity brings together people of different backgrounds and perspectives and leads to innovation, creativity and a more vibrant community.

We want to go on record as advocates of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. AAUW of Oregon, Ashland Branch, firmly and unequivocally condemns the use of any racist threats or statements, violence, and harassment.

Regina Ayars and Catherine Lutes

Co-presidents of Ashland Branch, AAUW of Oregon
