Incident started when vehicle fire spread to nearby vegetation

A vehicle fire on the Siskiyou Summit spread to nearby vegetation Thursday afternoon, starting a grass fire that has prompted a response from multiple area agencies, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry.

Crews are combating the fire, located at milepost 1 off Interstate 5 just north of the Oregon-California border, with two helicopters and multiple engines. ODF crews are joined by firefighters from Jackson County Fire District No. 5 and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, according to an ODF Facebook post.

Northbound I-5 traffic was backed up about two miles as of 3:30 p.m.

“The fire is estimated to be two acres and the majority of the active fire is knocked down and extinguished,” the post reads. “Our firefighters will remain engaged as long as they’re needed, however Cal Fire will be bringing in their aircraft.”
