Green debris disposal set for April 24 and May 8, hazardous waste disposal on May 7
Ashland residents can make their surroundings safer at no cost to them, thanks to a pair of upcoming free drop-off events.
Green debris drop off days are intended to reduce the risk of fire by removing flammable debris from Ashland yards, and a household hazardous waste disposal day offers the opportunity to purge homes of hazardous chemicals, batteries and sprays. Both events are offered at no charge.
Ashland Fire & Rescue, Recology Ashland and the Wildfire Safety Commission are offering the 11th annual green debris drop off days from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 24, and Sunday, May 8, at the Valley View Transfer Station, 3000 Valley View Road, Ashland.
Participants should bring ID to show proof of their Ashland address.
The goal is to get more people to reduce wildfire fuels by removing flammable vegetation around their homes by reducing the cost to do so. Removing wildfire fuel like leaves, pine needles and small branches from around your house and gutters can significantly reduce your wildfire risk and help prevent the spread of wildfire within the city of Ashland.
Only organic green debris will be accepted, including leaves, pine needles, small branches (up to 6 inches in diameter), brush and other green debris.
Not accepted will be trash, stumps, logs, firewood, soil, dirt, rocks and treated lumber.
If you bring your green debris in bags, the bags need to be emptied and taken home.
A small number of volunteers will be on site to assist with removing green debris from your vehicle or trailer.
Recology Ashland composts all green debris and keeps it out of the landfill.

Hazardous waste disposal day
Rogue Disposal and Recycling hosts its annual hazardous waste drop-off event from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at 8001 Table Rock Road in White City.
It’s a chance to toss toxins including household cleaning supplies, paint removers and garden chemicals, from drain cleaner and weed killer to bleach and bug spray.
Accepted materials include window cleaner, bathroom cleaner, anything containing bleach or ammonia, pesticides and insecticides, toxic wood preservatives, light ballasts, alkaline and rechargeable batteries, thermostats containing mercury, and swimming pool chemicals.
Paint will not be accepted. Neither will fluorescent light tubes.
