Ashland’s White Cloud Press slashes book prices to benefit new online community news service

By Tod Davies

White Cloud Press will open its warehouse doors for a going-out-of-business celebration on the first weekend of June. All books in its Ashland warehouse will be on sale at a massive discount. Books will sell from $2 to $8 with a large portion of sales going to support Ashland.news, the new online community news service that launched in January. Local musicians will serenade the sale, and other surprises are planned.

Twenty-nine years ago, in 1993, the husband-and-wife team of Steve Scholl and Janice Lineberger founded White Cloud Press in their Santa Cruz home. They moved to Ashland in 1994 and the press expanded its offerings of books on religion and spirituality, yoga, ecology, memoirs, poetry and novels. Now the press is ending its run and closing its doors.

Publisher Scholl and owner Stephen Sendar want to use the sale as a way to say “thank you” to the people of the Rogue Valley for their support over the last 28 years. “My hope is that every home in Ashland will end up with a few White Cloud Press titles on their bookshelves,” Scholl said.

Scholl will join Geoffrey Riley on the The Jefferson Exchange on Jefferson Public Radio (JPR) for an interview on Thursday, June 2, to talk about White Cloud Press, as well as why he wanted to have a benefit for Ashland.news.

White Cloud titles and authors have been praised by the New York Times, Publishers Weekly, Christian Science Monitor, Time Magazine, Washington Post, Parade, People, Tikkun and Chronicle of Higher Education, and been featured on CNN, Nightline, PBS, CBS Evening News, Good Morning America, National Public Radio and — in what Scholl refers to as his very favorite moment in the media spotlight — The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Leaders of thought such as Jimmy Carter, Karen Armstrong, Deepak Chopra, Huston Smith, Queen Noor, Brian Swimme, Thich Nhat Hahn, Cornell West, Alice Walker, Joanna Macy, Jane Hirschield, Robin Williams and Greg Mortenson have praised White Cloud’s titles.

The sale will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, June 4 and 5, at 300 East Hersey St., Unit 1.

Everything must go; all sales benefit Ashland.news.
