Two decades after it last adopted a wildfire protection plan, the Ashland City Council is due to consider whether to approve a vastly revised plan on Tuesday, Aug. 19. To bring Ashland down from the top 3% of communities in the U.S. at risk from wildfire, the area must become “a fuel break — not a fuel source,” the plan says.

Around 80 individuals — from neighbors who have lived in south Ashland for years to cyclists from Ashland DEVO, a youth mountain bike group — overflowed the chairs at Ashland Senior Center for an open house about East Main Park hosted by Ashland Parks & Recreation on Thursday evening, Aug. 14.

The Ashland City Council will consider a comprehensive 10-year plan to reduce wildfire risks for 90% of the city’s properties, a proposal to annex a more than 200-unit apartment complex site into city limits, and a proposal to expand construction costs at the city’s emergency shelter to nearly $1 million contract on Tuesday, Aug. 19.

The Parks & Recreation Commission on Wednesday recommended updated rental rates for the historic Ashland Community Center and Pioneer Hall. The rates, which factor in cleaning and administrative costs, go to the City Council on Sept. 16 for review.

During a Tuesday public forum with officials, a pair of Ashland city clerks voiced their frustration over a recently approved pay structure that they say strips them of “step” increases, calling the changes “insulting” and a blow to morale — especially compared to significant salary raises awarded to managers.

Mariane Berry, Ashland’s finance director, has resigned, citing family obligations and an out-of-state move. Hired in 2023, Berry is the latest in a series of high-level city officials to step down.

Two Ashland groups that need volunteers to help feed the unhoused will host a training from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11 at the Ashland Public Library.
