Nonprofit launches seven-month, four-county project to combat homelessness while building community

Want to be a uniter, not a divider? To build relationships, strengthen collaboration skills and explore different views, all while working together to address issues related to housing and homelessness? Urban Rural Action, a national nonprofit, non-partisan organization that strives to bring Americans together across divides to tackle the nation’s most urgent challenges, is looking for 28 volunteer participants from four Southern Oregon Counties — Jackson, Douglas, Josephine and Klamath — to take part in a seven-month project to make a meaningful impact on housing and homelessness in Southern Oregon, all while building relationships and engagement in the community.

Sunstone housing project developers hear questions, concerns about development, location; school district employees weigh in 

In an open house with Portland-based developer Edlen & Co. and locally-based Arkitek and Outlier Construction held for school district employees in late February, the real estate investment firm heard a mix of praise, questions and concerns from those in attendance on the proposed project to build a 90-plus unit housing development in conjunction with nonprofit Sunstone Housing Collaborative, established by two members of the Ashland School Board, at the southeast corner of East Main Street and South Mountain Avenue.

Planning commission approval of multi-family development upheld by Ashland City Council 

In a 5-1 vote Tuesday, Ashland City Council served as the final say and the next step toward development for Kestral Park, a multi-family housing development slated for North Mountain Avenue. The 2-acre development would create mixed forms of housing, including studio spaces with less than 500 square feet of floor space, and larger apartments between Interstate 5 and Bear Creek and the west of North Mountain Avenue.

Attendees at Wednesday night’s Ashland Community Resource Fair could find information at various tables piled with printed information and staffed by representatives from such organizations as ACCESS, Opportunities for Housing, Resources & Assistance, the Sunstone Housing Collaborative, 211 Eviction Prevention Program, the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Ashland area residents struggling with issues related to housing can find resources at an annual Community Resource Fair from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Ashland Public Library. Information will be available regarding housing availability, first-time homeowner resources, tenant rights and sourcing basic needs such as food.

Oregon lawmakers target high screening fees, deposits for renters

State lawmakers last week considered proposals to ban landlords from charging screening fees and charge landlords who take a holding deposit and then fail to actually rent the apartment, as well as a bill tenant advocates objected to that would allow landlords to charge monthly fees instead of a security deposit.
