Working toward net-zero: Co-op replacing gas stoves with induction ranges in back-line kitchen

The Ashland Food Co-op recently made a big change to its back line in the kitchen, where food prep for the deli happens. It removed the last of its gas range appliances, installing three new induction ranges. The highly efficient electric appliances heat pots and pans directly using magnets. In making this switch, the co-op is moving one step closer to its goal of “carbon neutrality” (net-zero carbon emissions) by 2030.

More than 60 people gathered in the shadow of Talent City Hall on Tuesday to speak their minds about long and frequent power outages in the area. Many shared elaborate systems of generators, batteries and extension cords they feel compelled to leave strung up around their homes.

Talent residents to rally Tuesday for reliable power

Residents of Talent will gather outside Talent City Hall on Tuesday as part of an ongoing effort to voice concern and frustration at repeated power outages in the city throughout the summer. Affected residents will “meet and be heard” at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, according to a post in the Heart of Talent Facebook group. Those in the Wagner Creek area are encouraged to attend, the post said.

Jackson County Fuel Committee marks anniversary with Folk Music Festival

The Jackson County Fuel Committee will host a Folk Music Festival on Saturday, Aug. 31, featuring musicians Jen Ambrose, Ríméad, and Victoria Johnson and Friends at Paschal Winery and Vineyard to celebrate JCFC’s 46th anniversary. The event costs $25 to attend and will offer a no-host bar and bites from local restaurants.

Power turned off near Southern Oregon University while repairs made to pole

Power was shut off in an area south of Southern Oregon University Monday morning so repairs could be made to a damaged power pole, the city of Ashland said in an Everbridge Alert. Power will remain out temporarily until repairs can be safely completed. That was estimated to take two or three hours when the release was sent at 9 a.m. Monday.
