Pride on parade: Main Street procession followed by bandshell show

An exuberant crowd of an estimated 1,000 people lined Ashland’s Main Street Saturday morning, cheering and applauding the 14th annual Southern Oregon Pride Parade. The street was filled with color and motion as participants pranced, danced and sang, recapturing the energy of Pride Parades of the past.

Pride Parade returns Saturday morning in Ashland

Award-winning playwright Justin Huertas will be grand marshal of the 2024 Pride Parade, set to roll through downtown Ashland on Saturday, Oct. 5. The parade will make its way from Union Street to Lithia Park starting at 10 a.m. Huertas is author of the book, music and lyrics for “Lizard Boy,” in which he plays the starring role at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival through Oct. 12.

After five years of display and many weeks of discussion, a decision was made to take down a pride banner at Ashland Public Library, the library’s management decided on a split vote at a meeting Aug. 21, a followup to an earlier meeting on July 29.

City of Ashland closes off ‘front lawn’ of ‘night lawn’

In the chill, weak sunlight of early morning Monday, around a dozen people moved steadily through their daily process of taking down tents and packing away belongings on the patch of lawn behind the city police station that serves as the city of Ashland’s dusk-to-dawn sleeping area, a designated area where it’s OK to sleep overnight. But Monday, Aug. 26, marked the end of the city’s allowing the stashing of possessions moved off the lawn and onto a strip of lawn near East Main Street.

Estimated 6,000 Jackson County residents now eligible for free health insurance

An estimated 6,000 additional Jackson County residents are eligible for Oregon’s free health insurance program, Oregon Health Plan, following the July 1 launch of “OHP Bridge.” OHP Bridge will provide free health insurance (medical, dental and mental health) and transportation support to appointments for those earning between 138 to 200% of the federal poverty level (FPL).

‘Telling the American narrative’: SOU to conduct archaeological investigations of historic eastern Oregon logging town this fall

With a newly funded $20,000 grant from the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office, some Southern Oregon University’s Sociology and Anthropology Program students and staff will travel to eastern Oregon this fall to perform archaeological excavations for a logging ghost town that once was home to a diverse community in the early 20th century, including African-American and white loggers.
