Alleged shooter accused of opening fire on passing motorists after crashing car on Interstate 5, north of Exit 14

By Ashland.news staff

An Ashland man suspected in a shooting incident on Interstate 5 over the weekend was indicted in Jackson County Circuit Court on Tuesday, July 22.

Court documents note that Devanta Bell Mader, 29, was brought up on 10 charges that include attempted murder, attempted assault with a firearm, criminal mischief with a firearm, four counts of unlawful use of a weapon, recklessly endangering another person, driving under the influence of intoxicants, and reckless driving.

According to court documents, on Saturday, July 19, Mader, under the influence of drugs, crashed his car on Interstate 5 and then opened fire on passing motorists.

The court documents note that people “fled the scene in fear” after either hearing gunshots or seeing Mader with a gun. Mader is alleged to have fired on responding officers and fled the scene on foot, according to law enforcement officials.

Law enforcement surrounded Mader about 200 yards away from where the incident initially occurred, according to a press release from the Eagle Point Police Department. Using an Eagle Point Police Department drone and an armored vehicle, authorities arrested Mader without any further incident.

Mader is being held at the Jackson County Jail on $1 million bail, according to court documents.
