Ashland Parks & Recreation Commissioners will discuss and vote on whether to hire Rocky Houston to fill the position of APRC director at the commission’s business meeting Wednesday evening. The commission already announced the hiring of Houston at its June 12 meeting.

The search for a new director began in March and was led by the city of Ashland’s Human Resources department. Of 19 applicants, six interviews and three follow-up interviews, Houston was chosen by a hiring panel consisting of city staff and parks commissioners, according to meeting materials.

The interviews and deliberations to choose Houston were conducted during a series of executive sessions noticed on the city of Ashland website, according to meeting materials. Commissioners are being asked to file a motion, vote on and “affirm the city manager’s execution of the employment contract,” according to materials.

In other business Wednesday, commissioners will consider the functions of the city of Ashland’s new website that pertain to APRC and continue consideration for a route for the soon-to-be installed David’s Chair, according to meeting materials

The meeting will be held in-person starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, in the Ashland City Council chamber, 1175 East Main St. The meeting can also be viewed on Channel 9 or Channels 180 and 181 (for Charter Communications) or live stream via rvtv.sou.edu select RVTV Prime.

Public testimony will be accepted in person for those who fill out a speaker request card in Council Chambers.
