Letter: ‘The future of our nation hangs in the balance’

September 25, 2022

The 2022 election cycle is critical up and down the ballot. Republicans across the board have dedicated themselves to undermining democracy, suppressing the vote, and abridging individuals’ freedoms, such as a woman’s right to control her own body. Voting for Republicans at any level means endorsing the MAGA (“Make America Great Again”) Republican ethos of rejecting election outcomes, rejecting democracy and undermining the U.S. Constitution.

In Jackson County we have real choices. For the County Commission, we can support candidates who accept reality and are committed to making policy based on evidence rather than QAnon delusion. The candidates are Denise Krause and Al Densmore. For State Senate District 3, only Jeff Golden is committed to democracy and a women’s right to reproductive choice.

For governor, both Johnson and Drazan are committed to global suicide at the hands of climate change. Only Tina Kotek is committed to acting to reduce our state’s contribution to global warming.

Voters who believe in the United States and its constitution should vote for candidates who likewise believe in those principles. Time and again, Republicans, including the Jackson County Republican Party, have stated they reject democracy and individual freedoms.

I want to be represented by individuals who likewise accept reality, support democracy, and reject Trump’s Big Lie. The future of our nation hangs in the balance; it depends on our vote in 2022. If we support democracy and public policy based on reality, we cannot vote for Republicans at any level.
