Officials: isolated to scattered thunderstorms, along with dry fuels, could lead to new fire starts

Ashland.news staff report

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for Ashland and surrounding areas in Southern Oregon due to abundant lightning on dry fuels.

Weather service officials note in the warning, in effect until 11 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, that the region could see isolated to scattered thunderstorms, along with associated outflow winds up to 35 mph.

The thunderstorms, when combined with dry fuels, could lead to several new fire starts, according to the weather service.

The weather service issues a red flag warning when it identifies weather conditions that promote the rapid spread of fire, which may become life-threatening. It does not mean there is a fire.
