Topics include rise of white nationalism and honoring community champions

The rise of white nationalism in the state of Oregon and its impact on Southern Oregon will be the theme of a community conversation from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, in Ashland, the Urban League of Portland has announced. Panelists will also honor “community champions who are doing dynamic work to advance the movement forward,” according to an event announcement.

This is the third “Urban League for All of Us Community Conversation” of the year, following a June event in Hood River.

The Ashland event will be co-hosted by Urban League President and CEO Nkenge Harmon Johnson, Artistic Director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Nataki Garrett, and Ashland City Councilor Gina DuQuenne.

The Urban League of Portland’s mission is to empower African Americans and others to achieve equality in education, employment, health, economic security and quality of life, according to its website. Since the Portland chapter’s founding in 1945, the Urban League post’s mission has included outreach to all of Oreon and southwest Washington, explained Harmon Johnson in an appearance on Jefferson Public Radio’s Jefferson Exchange on Aug. 17.

The event will be live both for a small group — limited to 35 people — at a location on the campus of Southern Oregon University and on Facebook and YouTube streams.

Pre-registration is required via this site, which also offers a link through which questions for discussion can be submitted. Questions may also be submitted by email to ace@ulpdx.org.

Organizers ask that those attending in person be vaccinated and wear a mask.
