National Weather Service issues additional advisory through Wednesday
By Steve Mitchell, Ashland.news
As temperatures continue to inch toward triple digits in Ashland, the National Weather Service has extended its extreme heat warning for the region through Tuesday, July 15.
As temperatures hit 96, 94 and 99 degrees Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Alexis Hermansen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Medford, said the agency would issue an additional hot weather advisory to run from Tuesday, July 15 to Wednesday, July 16.
The extreme heat warning underscores that dangerous hot temperatures will continue through Tuesday, while the heat advisory notes that hazardous, but less severe conditions are expected until Wednesday.
Regardless, as temperatures near triple digits, Hermansen said it’s important people, especially vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children, take steps to stay cool and safe.
The National Weather Service suggests drinking more fluids, staying in air-conditioned spaces and shade whenever possible, wearing lightweight, light-colored clothes and checking in on neighbors.
During an excessive heat warning, it’s also recommended to work outside early in the morning or late in the evening, should overnight temperatures drop.
People who need cool places to get out of the heat can find quiet, cool places in and around Ashland, including Ashland parks, the Ashland Public Library (from noon to 5 p.m.) and other public and private facilities that are open during the heat of the day, according to emergency service officials.
Community meals will be offered by local volunteers at the Gresham Room in the Ashland Public Library from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays this summer. The meals are hosted by Southern Oregon Housing for All downstairs at the Ashland Public Library at 410 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland.
Questions about the meals in the Gresham Room may be directed to Avram Sacks at 541-220-7307.
