Obituary: Phyllis Norris

April 22, 2025

Oct. 14, 1947 — Feb. 24, 2025

Phyllis Ann Norris, a cherished resident of Ashland, Oregon, passed away peacefully in her home on February 24, 2025, at the age of 77.

Born on October 14, 1947, on Peaks Island, Maine, to Mary E. Babbitt and Roy V. Norris, Phyllis was known for her warmth, strength, and deep devotion to her family, friends, and the Buddhist community. She is survived by her loving husband, Alan Sommers, with whom she shared many cherished years; her son, Finn Norris-Gray; and her stepson, Josh Sommers, both of whom she loved dearly. Phyllis’s sister, Lynne McDermott, along with Lynne’s three children and several grandchildren, will forever hold her memory close, as will the many friends and extended family members whose lives she touched.

Phyllis embodied a self-made spirit, building a successful career as a CPA while raising her son, Finn. She had a passion for restoring and redecorating homes, transforming properties in Ashland, along the Oregon coast, and in Baja, Mexico. Her selfless nature was evident in her deep commitment to volunteering extensively at Buddhist centers, including Kagyu Droden Kunchab in San Francisco and Kagyu Sukha Chöling in Ashland. A celebration of her life will be held on May 10, 2025 at 10 a.m., at Kagyu Sukha Chöling, located at 109 Clear Creek Drive, Suite 101, Ashland, Oregon 97520. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Kagyu Sukha Chöling, reflecting her deep connection to the Buddhist community.

The family’s goal is to create a living tribute to her phenomenal spirit in the wetlands next to KSC. This will be a space where all are welcome to honor her and her dedication to our community. Contributions toward making this vision a reality can be made via GoFundMe: https://gofund.me/6a5f58c3

Phyllis’s spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved her, and she will be deeply missed
