Letter: It is genocide, not a war

May 23, 2024

The corporate media continually refer to the “Israel-Hamas War.” It is not a war. Israel is the world’s most powerful military after the United States, China, and Russia. Palestinians in Gaza have had no army, navy, air force, nor billions in massive military aid sent by the U.S. to Israel. Hamas is a governing political body in Gaza that won a free and fair election in 2006. It includes a small armed wing.

Political leaders and the corporate media assert that Israel has “a right to defend itself” — even in Gaza. Israel has no right to defend itself against opposition to its colonial rule.

The corporate media continually refer to Hamas has a terrorist group. But in 2019 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly told his Likud Party colleagues to “support bolstering Hamas and transferring money to Hamas…. This is part of our strategy to isolate the Palestinians in Gaza from the Palestinians in the West Bank.”

For decades, Palestinians in Gaza have engaged in peaceful protests against Israel’s illegal and immoral occupation. Each time Israel has responded with massive violence, including the ongoing invasion of Gaza that has killed tens of thousands of civilians, many of whom are children. More than half of all homes in Gaza, and many schools, universities, hospitals, mosques and churches have been destroyed.

For 75 years the U.S.-Israeli genocidal assault against the Palestinian people has been lied about and distorted by politicians and the corporate media in order to keep us ignorant of their history of legitimate struggle against an occupying power and its crimes against humanity.
