Carmel Zahran cites personal circumstances, will remain in current position

Carmel Zahran, citing family and health reasons, has declined a promotion from Ashland assistant city attorney to city attorney. 

“I deeply appreciate the opportunity to serve as the City Attorney for Ashland. However, for recent health and family reasons, I must withdraw myself from consideration for this position,” Zahran said in a news release from the city of Ashland. 

The city had been in negotiations with Zahran for the promotion since she was offered the position Nov. 3. Acting City Attorney Doug McGeary will remain head of Ashland’s legal department, according to the release. 

“With Doug and Carmel continuing to lead our Legal Department, the City is in good hands,” Acting City Manager Sabrina Cotta said in the release. 

Mayor Tonya Graham stated in the release she was disappointed by but supportive of Zahran’s decision.
