July 28, 1929 — Nov. 20, 2023

Marilyn Marie Waldeck, born in Detroit on July 28, 1929, joined her Lord on Nov. 20, surrounded by love from family and friends. Marilyn’s remarkable life was characterized by a deep love for music, dedication to her community and a commitment to helping others.

As a young girl, Marilyn discovered her passion for music, excelling in piano lessons. She made history as the first in her family to attend college, graduating from the University of Michigan in 1951 with a Bachelor’s Degree in psychology. It was at the university that she met her soon-to-be husband, Edward (Ted) Laird. Together, they embarked on a journey that led them to Mill Valley, California, where they raised four children — Michael, Pamela, Susan, and Matthew — before parting ways in 1976.

Marilyn’s love for music remained a constant throughout her life. As a devoted member of Peace Lutheran Church in Mill Valley, she played the organ and piano for Sunday services, Christmas shows and special events. Her musical talents extended to directing the bell choir, earning her the endearing title of “Head Dingdong” at home.

In 1980, Marilyn found love again and married Carl Waldeck. They continued their lives together in Mill Valley until 1998, when they relocated to Ashland. Following Carl’s passing in 2011, Marilyn chose to stay in Ashland, moving to Mountain Meadows, an active senior community, where she embraced new friendships.

In 2019, Marilyn and her partner, Don Baldrica, moved to Sonoma, California, to be closer to families. Their Friday evening happy hour ritual became a cherished family tradition, filled with love and laughter.

Marilyn’s final move occurred on Nov. 20, when she peacefully transitioned to be with her Lord.  Her legacy is not only defined by her musical talents but also by her high standards, commitment to family and charitable contributions to numerous causes. She supported organizations dedicated to women, children, animals, veterans and nature, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those she touched. Marilyn is deeply missed but fondly remembered for her beautiful smile, sparkling blue eyes, keen sense of humor and commitment to helping others.

A celebration of Marilyn’s life will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Peace Lutheran Church, 205 Tennessee Valley Road, Mill Valley. A reception will follow at the same location.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests considering a donation in Marilyn’s memory to treatment of macular degeneration or a charity of your choice.
