Chabad undamaged in bias crime on Siskiyou Boulevard

By Morgan Rothborne, Ashland.news

Ashland police are seeking information about a Wednesday evening bias crime at an Ashland synagogue.

After dark, a suspect and two others approached Chabad Jewish Center of Southern Oregon on Siskiyou Boulevard and threw things at it while shouting. But the damage inflicted in the incident was superficial, said Ashland Police Chief Tighe O’Meara.

“Nothing that a hose won’t take care of, it was eggs he was throwing so there’s clean-up but no lasting damage,” he said.

A camera in the area recorded the suspect and two companions. It appears from the footage there were no uninvolved bystanders. The video included audio and the suspect can be heard yelling “Heil Hitler,” O’Meara said.

The incident is under investigation.

“Bias crimes will be investigated and taken seriously and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law in cooperation with the Jackson County Attorney’s office,” he said.

Anyone who recognizes the person in the images, or who has any other information regarding the incident, is asked to contact Officer Angel Valdez at the Ashland Police Department (541-482-5211, or call the anonymous tip line at 541-552-2333 or email tipline@ashland.or.us).
