Organizers make the case for affordable housing project on school district property

A broad alliance of Ashland leaders continued their pitch Thursday for a proposed 90-plus unit affordable housing development that could boost enrollment at schools. At the Ashland High Library, across the street from the proposed 4.18-acre project site at the southeast corner of South Mountain Avenue and East Main Street, about 70 people generally voiced support for the concept at what was billed as a listening session hosted by the Sunstone Housing Collaborative.

SOU’s men’s basketball team took down a third consecutive conference champion and higher-seeded opponent in Friday’s NAIA Championship Round of 16, defeating No. 7-seeded Keiser (Fla.) 83-79 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. At 3 p.m. PDT Saturday, they’ll face defending national champion and top-seeded Freed-Hardeman in the national championship tournament quarterfinals.

‘I wanted to do something’: Ashland actor/director to stage benefit performance of ‘The Vagina Monologues’

Ashland actor and director Lia Elizabeth Rose Dugal is staging a new production of “The Vagina Monologues” by V (previously Eve Ensler). Produced through Dugal’s company Cafe-Girl Thriving Artists, performances will take place at the Bellview Grange in Ashland on Friday, March 28, and Saturday, March 29. Proceeds will benefit Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Oregon.

Bill that could have offered utilities protection from fire lawsuits gets fix

Oregon lawmakers on Tuesday tweaked a bill intended to increase fire mitigation to ensure it does not also offer utilities immunity from liability in lawsuits for wildfires ignited by power lines. The change to a single sentence in House Bill 3666 comes as a relief to some critics, who feared that giving utilities wildfire safety certificates that establish they’ve “acted reasonably” by state standards would in effect offer them absolute immunity from liability in lawsuits if their equipment causes a wildfire.
