SOU Raider Stadium hosted National Guard mobilization ceremony on Sunday

Family, friends and supporters of more than 200 citizen soldiers preparing to deploy to Egypt for a peace-keeping mission by the Oregon Army National Guard’s 1-186th Infantry gathered at Southern Oregon University’s Raider Stadium on Sunday morning for a mobilization ceremony, hosting some of Oregon Army National Guard’s top brass.

‘Empty Bowls’ supper Friday benefits hungry people

Tickets are on sale for Empty Bowls, a traditional Peace House fundraiser that supports free Ashland dinner programs, including Uncle Foods Diner, Food Angels, and Jobs with Justice Peace Meals. The annual supper will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, in Wesley Hall at Ashland’s First United Methodist Church.

Ukraine: A cultural celebration

Local nonprofit Anima Mundi Productions will present a Ukrainian Cultural Fair with treats, artwork and crafts from the local Ukrainian community on Friday, Oct. 25, followed by a concert featuring Ukrainian pianist Nadia Shpachenko on Sunday, Oct. 27 playing works by Chopin and Ukrainian composers, including two world premieres about the war.

Ashland filmmaker uncovers ‘13th Disciple’ for new comedy

Ashland’s Richard Seidman, a screenwriter turned filmmaker, has taken matters into his own hands after years of unproduced scripts in the hope a crowd-funded short film will bring his vision to life: “Schmendrick: The Thirteenth Disciple.” Seidman plans to submit the movie to film festivals and competitions, including the Ashland Independent Film Festival.
