Hunger on the rise in Oregon after downward trend before the pandemic

A quarter of a century ago, Oregon had one of the highest rates of food insecurity and hunger in the country. By 2019, rates in the state dipped below the U.S. average. Then the pandemic hit, and rates rose again. With hunger growing, food advocates and a group of lawmakers on the Oregon Hunger Task Force called last week for the Legislature to enact in the upcoming session a number of measures to address hunger and the plight of low-income residents.

Mayor answers questions about water rate hikes, deer attacks

When Ashland Mayor Tonya Graham reprised large parts of her State of the City address she delivered the night before during a city town hall meeting to the Rotary Club of Ashland on Thursday, club members took advantage of the question and answer session to query the mayor on a variety of city issues, including making the city recorder a staff position instead of an elected office, and anticipated increases in water rates.

Three people were honored for their contributions to Ashland during the annual city town hall on Wednesday. Carol Carlson and Janet Troy were chosen for the James M. Ragland Volunteer Spirit Community Service Award. Brian Almquist was chosen for the Alan C. Bates Public Service Award.

Adventure meal business featured on ‘Shark Tank’ plans move to Ashland

An Alaska food company that wowed the likes of billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban on national television with its just-add-water adventure meals is charting course for Southern Oregon. Heather’s Choice, an Anchorage-based maker of lightweight packable meals featured in a Jan. 12 episode of “Shark Tank,” is preparing to move its operations to Ashland.

Latest data show overdoses continue to skyrocket in Oregon

As lawmakers prepare to tackle the state’s addiction crisis, new data from the Oregon Health Authority shows how dire the addiction crisis has become. In 2019, 280 people died of a drug overdose in Oregon. Fatalities rose every year after, more than tripling by 2022, when 956 died. And last year, even more people died, according to preliminary data.
