Assistant city attorney declines promotion to city attorney post

Carmel Zahran, citing family and health reasons, has declined a promotion from Ashland assistant city attorney to city attorney. The city had been in negotiations with Zahran for the promotion since she was offered the position Nov. 3. Acting City Attorney Doug McGeary will remain head of Ashland’s legal department, according to the release.

Divided Ashland council passes camping ordinance

On a 4-2 vote, Ashland City Council approved an ordinance Tuesday to control where and how camping can take place on the streets of Ashland.  Councilors Paula Hyatt, Dylan Bloom, Gina DuQuenne and Jeff Dahle voted in favor of the ordinance while councilors Bob Kaplan and Eric Hansen voted against.

‘This is a call to action’: BLM wants to log dead and dying trees in Southern Oregon

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has created a draft plan to log dead and dying trees across 5,000 acres of its properties within 1 mile of communities, within 500 feet of prominent roads or within 500 feet of the boundaries of certain roads, ridges, waterways or other natural features that can be used as fire breaks to control wildfire. The public is being asked to comment on the draft plan through Jan. 7.
