Ties between Ashland and Ukraine grow closer with new sister-city relationship

The Ashland City Council unanimously approved a sister city partnership with Sviatohirsk, Ukraine, at the end of Tuesday’s regular business meeting. The action, which authorizes Ashland Mayor Tonya Graham to sign a memorandum of understanding with the mayor of Sviatohirsk, came on the eve of Ashland city officials first official return visit to its current sister city of Guanajuato, Mexico, since 2019 on Wednesday.

Dr. Lanita Witt died beside her wife, Suzanne Willow, Dec. 15, 2022. Her colorful, successful life will be celebrated a second time this week with a ceremony and a renewed drive for a scholarship in her name. During the summer solstice, Wednesday, June 21, at 5 p.m., at Willow-Witt Ranch outside Ashland, anyone who wants to is welcome to celebrate Witt’s life, said Willow.

Profile: Local writer Kristin Elizabeth Clark, who relocated to Ashland in 2020, brings an elaborate historical patchwork of experiences to her writing, including making silk flowers, teaching taekwondo, producing youth theater and being a scenic artist for theater. Her life’s winding path began with growing up in Las Vegas, attending college in Utah and Nevada, and later marrying, settling, and raising her children in California.

Juneteenth and fathers celebrated, fundraiser launched Sunday

About 150 people attended the Juneteenth “Crystallizing Our Call” Celebration Picnic at Ashland Creek Park on Sunday. The three-hour outdoor community event served as celebration of Father’s Day as well as Juneteenth, and also as the official fundraising launch for the permanent public art installation, “Ancestor’s Future: Crystallizing our Call,” a sculpture slated for installation at the park.
