DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2007 by Norwegian trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth as a fun and exciting collaboration between musical friends\, the ten-piece\, all-female brass ensemble tenThing (pronounced tenTing) has firmly established itself on the international scene to great acclaim. \nThe ensemble first came into prominence thanks to performances all over its native Norway\, eventually delighting a huge national audience by opening the 2011 Norwegian Grammy Awards. Soon after\, the group drew international attention after its highly successful appearance at the BBC Proms at London’s Cadogan Hall. \nThe concert program features varied repertoire\, including music by Hindegard von Bingen\, Florence Price\, Gabriel Fauré\, Camille Saint-Säens\, Astor Piazziolla\, and many more.

In the final months of his mother Elaine’s late-stage dementia\, gay filmmaker Kyle Henry uses his extensive family archive to travel back in time\, exploring the complicated bonds of identity\, history\, and belonging in his large Texas family. Charting Elaine’s promising early life through her years of motherhood and self-sacrifice\, finally tracing their relationship to its inevitable end\, Time Passages playfully explores Kyle’s conflicting feelings of love\, grief\, guilt\, and helplessness. Beneath the Kodachrome smiles and grainy Super-8 home movies lie the difficult truths that so many families hide. From his SXSW premiered documentaries University Inc.’s exploration of toxic higher-ed corporatization and American Cowboy’s sensitive stereotype toppling portrayal of a gay rodeo champ; to Sundance and Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight premiered fiction feature Room’s psychic journey of a working class woman in post-9/11 America\, Fourplay’s vivid investigation of sexual intimacy\, to Chicago set Rogers Park’s “eye for the intimate\, dividend-paying gesture” (NYTimes) that is “brimming with universal truths” (Chicago Sun-Times)\, his deep mining of human experience has the purposeful goal of facilitating community discussion\, as he tours with all of his works to converse directly with audiences in a variety of settings. Time Passages is his re-emergence as a documentarian after 20 years making fiction films.

SUMMARY:SOU High School Honor Band - Free Concert!
DESCRIPTION:The Annual SOU Honor Band for high school bands will be held at SOU on Friday\, February 21 through Sunday\, February 23\, 2025 culminating in a FREE concert at 1:00pm on Sunday\, February 23rd at the SOU Music Recital Hall. The best high school bands from across the Pacific Northwest will come together for a day of learning and engagement and will perform together. Directed by Dr. Alexander Gonzalez. \nFree livestream: https://youtube.com/live/G280MJgJ1y0?feature=share \nThe SOU Music Department is beyond excited to welcome roughly 60 talented student musicians from all across the valley for a weekend of education\, community\, and marvelous music. The students will work from Friday through Sunday (a very short amount of time)\, to put on a concert of incredible wind band music. They will also be treated to our annual Spectrum Concert – a sampling of musical performances by the SOU collegiate music students.” – Alexander Gonzalez. \nHonor Band high school students representing Ashland\, Clackamas\, Henley\, Crater\, Grants Pass\, Hidden Valley\, Illinois Valley\, North and South Medford\, Phoenix\, Klamath Union\, Mazama\, Riddle\, Ridgeview\, Roseburg\, and Talent High Schools are recommended by their school band directors and have to apply for and are selected based on instrument\, experience\, and video auditions for the privilege of participating in the program. \nThe weekend will be spent rehearsing\, performing\, and attending classes. Music classes will be offered in conducting\, audio and music production\, film scoring\, drumming\, and mallet making\, all taught by SOU faculty. In addition to the musical training\, the high school students will have the opportunity to stay in the SOU dorms\, eat on campus\, and experience “a day in the life of a college music student.” \nOn Sunday\, February 23 at 1 p.m. the high school students will perform a free concert for their parents\, friends\, teachers\, and the community. SOU’s Music Department hosts the Honor Band annually\, to inspire high school students and provide them with a glimpse into auditioning\, studying\, and performing music at SOU. Similar festivals are also available for high school vocal and percussion students. “This festival will have a long-lasting impact on students\, directors\, and families who attended\, and we hope to see many of these high school students choose to pursue their degrees in music at SOU.” \n– Alexander Gonzalez.

Prior to this appointment\, Dr. Gonzalez was previously the Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Additionally\, he has taught conducting courses at Capital University Conservatory of Music (OH)\, served as Music Director of the Professional School Orchestra (OH)\, served as the director of the Middleton Symphony Orchestra’s Wind Octet (WI)\, taught music history at Hillsborough Community College (FL)\, and was a public-school educator in Florida and Colorado where he taught an array of courses at the middle and high school levels. \nHis current research centers around the body of works commissioned by Robert Boudreau for the American Wind Symphony Orchestra. In partnership with Editions Peters\, Alexander has created a critical edition of Eugène Bozza’s Children’s Overture and will create forthcoming editions of other works in this unique catalogue. Dr. Gonzalez received a Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from The Ohio State University\, where he studied with Dr. Russel Mikkelson. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the University of Florida and a Masters in Wind Conducting from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Additionally\, Alexander is an active member in the National Association for Music Education\, the College Band Directors National Association\, the National Band Association\, the National Association for Music Education\, Phi Mu Alpha\, Kappa Kappa Psi\, and Tau Beta Sigma.

Livestream available: $35/household. \nTickets are $35/reserved seating\, $30 seniors and are available at https://sou.universitytickets.com \nABOUT THE ARTISTS: \nRenowned international concert pianist Dr. Alexander Tutunov and his special guest\, classically trained pianist turned anesthesiologist\, local Rogue Valley resident Dr. Brian Hall\, will perform a great mix of beloved romantic music on this special concert. \nAlexander Tutunov is widely recognized as one of the most outstanding virtuosos of the former Soviet Union. First Prize winner of the Belarusian National Piano Competition and winner of the Russian National Piano Competition. Tutunov’s playing was described by Soviet Culture\, Moscow\, as “exhilarating and inspired\, and which demonstrated a unique talent”. Dr. Tutunov maintains a busy performing schedule in Europe\, China\, Mexico\, and the United States as a recitalist\, soloist with orchestra\, and on radio and television. Dr. Tutunov is also in demand as an adjudicator for piano competitions. Alexander Tutunov now lives in Ashland\, where he is Professor of Piano and Artist in Residence at Southern Oregon University. \nDr. Brian Hall2015 Seattle International Piano Competition award winner Brian Hall lives in Medford\, Oregon with his wife and five children. He has worked as an anesthesiologist in Medford for over thirteen years. In addition\, he currently serves as the Chief of Staff at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center. Before attending medical school at the University of Utah he completed a bachelors degree in piano performance at Brigham Young University\, where he studied with Dr. Paul Pollei. Brian’s wife Jill is also a musician\, and music plays an important role in their home. He believes music is vitally important for developing children into well-rounded adults. Brian was blessed to find a new piano mentor in Dr. Alexander Tutunov. Alexander’s incredible musical talents and great generosity were instrumental in Brian returning to the stage.

DESCRIPTION:Internationally recognized as one of today’s most acclaimed and admired pianists\, Yefim Bronfman stands among a handful of artists regularly sought by festivals\, orchestras\, conductors and recital series. His commanding technique\, power and exceptional lyrical gifts are consistently acknowledged by the press and audiences alike. \nFollowing summer festival appearances in Verbier\, Israel\, Aspen\, Grand Tetons and Sun Valley\, the season begins with a European tour celebrating the auspicious 500th anniversary of the Munich Opera and Orchestra with concerts in Lucerne\, Bucharest\, London\, Paris\, Linz\, Vienna and Munich. In partnership with Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra\, together they will visit Japan and Korea\, followed in the US by return engagements throughout the season with New York Philharmonic\, Boston\, Kansas City\, National\, Milwaukee\, Pittsburgh\, San Francisco symphonies and Minnesota Orchestra. With Munich Philharmonic and both Brahms concerti on the program\, he will travel to Spain and Carnegie Hall\, followed by European engagements with Budapest Festival Orchestra. An extensive winter/spring recital tour will begin in Ljubljana and include Milan\, Berlin\, Cleveland\, Chicago\, Vancouver\, Seattle\, San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, La Jolla and culminate in Carnegie Hall in early May. \nMr. Bronfman works regularly with an illustrious group of conductors\, including Daniel Barenboim\, Herbert Blomstedt\, Semyon Bychkov\, Riccardo Chailly\, Christoph von Dohnányi\, Gustavo Dudamel\, Charles Dutoit\, Daniele Gatti\, Valery Gergiev\, Alan Gilbert\, Vladimir Jurowski\, Zubin Mehta\, Riccardo Muti\, Andris Nelsons\, Yannick NÃczet-SÃcguin\, Sir Simon Rattle\, Esa-Pekka Salonen\, Jaap Van Zweden\, Franz Welser-Mast\, and David Zinman. Summer engagements have regularly taken him to the major festivals of Europe and the US. Always keen to explore chamber music repertoire\, his partners have included Pinchas Zukerman\, Martha Argerich\, Magdalena Kožená\, Anne-Sophie Mutter\, Emmanuel Pahud and many others. In 1991 he gave a series of joint recitals with Isaac Stern in Russia\, marking Mr. Bronfman’s first public performances there since his emigration to Israel at age 15. \nWidely praised for his solo\, chamber and orchestral recordings\, Mr. Bronfman has been nominated for 6 GRAMMY Awards\, winning in 1997 with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic for their recording of the three Bartok Piano Concerti. His prolific catalog of recordings includes works for two pianos by Rachmaninoff and Brahms with Emanuel Ax\, the complete Prokofiev concerti with the Israel Philharmonic and Zubin Mehta\, a Schubert/Mozart disc with the Zukerman Chamber Players and the soundtrack to Disney’s Fantasia 2000. His most recent CD releases are the 2014 GRAMMY® nominated Magnus Lindberg’s Piano Concerto No. 2 commissioned for him and performed by the New York Philharmonic conducted by Alan Gilbert on the Da Capo label; Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 with Mariss Jansons and the Bayerischer Rundfunk; a recital disc\, Perspectives\, complementing Mr. Bronfman’s designation as a Carnegie Hall ‘Perspectives’ artist for the 2007-08 season; and recordings of all the Beethoven piano concerti as well as the Triple Concerto together with violinist Gil Shaham\, cellist Truls Mørk\, and the Tönhalle Orchestra Zürich under David Zinman for the Arte Nova/BMG label. \nNow available on DVD are his performances of Liszt’s second piano concerto with Franz Welser-Mast and the Vienna Philharmonic from Schoenbrunn\, 2010 on Deutsche Grammophon; Beethoven’s fifth piano concerto with Andris Nelsons and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from the 2011 Lucerne Festival; Rachmaninoff’s third concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic and Sir Simon Rattle on the EuroArts label and both Brahms Concerti with Franz Welser-Mast and The Cleveland Orchestra (2015). \nBorn in Tashkent in the Soviet Union\, Yefim Bronfman immigrated to Israel with his family in 1973\, where he studied with pianist Arie Vardi\, head of the Rubin Academy of Music at Tel Aviv University. In the United States\, he studied at The Juilliard School\, Marlboro School of Music\, and the Curtis Institute of Music\, under Rudolf Firkusny\, Leon Fleisher\, and Rudolf Serkin. A recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize\, one of the highest honors given to American instrumentalists\, in 2010 he was further honored as the recipient of the Jean Gimbel Lane prize in piano performance from Northwestern University and in 2015 with an honorary doctorate from the Manhattan School of Music.

DESCRIPTION:Krystian Tkaczewski was born in 1980 in Tarnów\, Poland. In 2000 Krystian became a student of Olga Rusina at the Academy of Music in Wroclaw\, from which he graduated in 2004 with a Master of Arts degree. In 2007 Krystian received a graduate diploma\, and in 2014\, Krystian Tkaczewski a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Hartt School\, University of Hartford in the studio of professor Oxana Yablonskaya. Dance \nABOUT THE NEW DIRECTOR: \nDr. Alexander Gonzalez is the incoming Director of Bands at Southern Oregon University where he will conduct the Wind Ensemble\, Jazz Band\, and teach courses in music pedagogy. Prior to this appointment\, Dr. Gonzalez was previously the Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Additionally\, he has taught conducting courses at Capital University Conservatory of Music (OH)\, served as Music Director of the Professional School Orchestra (OH)\, served as the director of the Middleton Symphony Orchestra’s Wind Octet (WI)\, taught music history at Hillsborough Community College (FL)\, and was a public-school educator in Florida and Colorado where he taught an array of courses at the middle and high school levels. \nHis current research centers around the body of works commissioned by Robert Boudreau for the American Wind Symphony Orchestra. In partnership with Editions Peters\, Alexander has created a critical edition of Eugène Bozza’s Children’s Overture and will create forthcoming editions of other works in this unique catalogue. Dr. Gonzalez received a Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from The Ohio State University\, where he studied with Dr. Russel Mikkelson. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the University of Florida and a Masters in Wind Conducting from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Additionally\, Alexander is an active member in the National Association for Music Education\, the College Band Directors National Association\, the National Band Association\, the National Association for Music Education\, Phi Mu Alpha\, Kappa Kappa Psi\, and Tau Beta Sigma.

Orphic means “beyond ordinary\,” a phrase that characterizes the ensemble and its mission: to commission and premiere new works by today’s most compelling composers; to broaden the audience for contemporary music; and to present concerts that are vibrantly communicative\, musically expressive\, and inspiringly virtuosic—or\, quite simply—extraordinary. \nThe quartet\, formed in 2017\, has gained notoriety both stateside and abroad. Having presented multiple tours in the United States\, as well as tours in both Germany and Austria\, Orphic continues its mission of commissioning new works for Percussion Quartet. To date\, the ensemble has over thirty original compositions to their commissioning credit. \nOrphic’s recent highlights include recital tours in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest\, the world premiere of Stefan Cwik’s Relics: Dances for Percussion Quartet and Orchestra with San Francisco’s Symphony Parnassus (nominated by the San Francisco Classical Voice for “Best New Music Performance” of the 2017-18 season)\, university residencies at Southern Nazarene University (OK) and George Fox University (OR)\, and a return engagement at the Arcata Playhouse (CA). In addition\, Orphic has been self-producing an ongoing concert series at University Presbyterian Church (CA) since early 2017\, and maintains a close relationship with the Nevada County Composer’s Cooperative\, having premiered works by Alexis Alrich\, Mark Vance\, and Durwynne Hsieh. \nOrphic will perform their flagship show\, Orphic: Unheard\, featuring a presentation of works commissioned by the ensemble. All of the music you will hear tonight is original. Over the course of every term\, MUSIX members pair up\, or consolidate into sub-groups to create music in a variety of ways. Some who read music will partner with those who intuit music\, and vice-versa. The music is sometimes created through an improvisational\, or “by rote” fashion. Other times it is completely conceived\, written out and prepared by a single individual for further development and rehearsal by a band. The MIP Lab is equipped with session mixers that allow up to 5 players to plug in and monitor themselves while rehearsing. Dr. Terry Longshore\, head of percussion at SOU\, has mentioned gleefully that it is bit like “blissful chaos” when observing the lab full of songwriters\, and two bands rehearsing at the same time in two different keys\, tempos\, and singers – the session mixers allow for near totally isolation through the players’ headphones! \nAll of MUSIX’s compositional approaches\, this music is aimed towards preparing an evening-length concert or to produce audio recordings worthy of release to the masses. Tonight’s concert will feature music from our catalog and several new songs owing to our growing collective of students.

According to The Strad\, the Quartetto’s Lincoln Center debut in 2022 “was distinguished by splendid balance\, abundant colour and a relaxed mastery of all the musical elements.” This season\, the Quartetto mark their 25th Anniversary Season with a world tour that takes them to North America\, Europe and Asia. \nQuartetto di Cremona was established at the Accademia Walter Stauffer in Cremona\, Italy\, and has toured extensively in Europe\, the United States\, South America and Asia. Steel Band\, and the SOU Percussion Ensemble performing several concert percussion works. Featured will be Longshore’s “Science Friction” and his new composition\, “Full Circle: Turtle Wisdom\,” for gong orchestra\, inspired by and featuring the artwork of Betty LaDuke. The ensemble will be joined by Longshore’s Honors College “Making Music” course\, and the concert will also feature guest artist Dr. Casey Shillam\, SOU’s Provost and Executive Vice-President. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS: \nThe Southern Oregon University Percussion Ensemble\, directed by Terry Longshore\, is dedicated to the performance of contemporary percussion repertoire and providing the members with a variety of musical experiences. The ensemble frequently collaborates with notable composers on premieres of new works\, performing repertoire ranging from contemporary music to world traditions to jazz- and rock-inspired compositions. \nThe ensemble gives several concerts every year at the Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University\, as well as many performances throughout the Southern Oregon community and the Pacific Northwest. The ensemble performs yearly at the Northwest Percussion Festival and has appeared at the Bang on a Can Long Play Festival in New York City\, Teatro Principal in Guanajuato\, Mexico\, the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC)\, Stanford University\, the Trinity Alps Performing Arts Center\, and the Oregon Fringe Festival. The ensemble has collaborated with many guest artists including Ivan Trevino\, Steven Schick\, Mark Applebaum\, Hands On’Semble\, Steve Smith\, Bonnie Whiting\, William Kraft\, Erik Griswold\, Vanessa Tomlinson\, Iván Manzanilla\, Dana Reason\, Tatsuya Nakatani\, Lynn Vartan\, Matthew \nColey\, Brad Dutz\, and Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic. The ensemble has commissioned\, co- commissioned\, or premiered works from Mark Applebaum\, Brad Dutz\, Michael Gordon\, Elliott Cole\, \nIvan Trevino\, Bryan Jeffs\, Jared Brown\, Chris Burton Jácome\, Jodi French\, Mark Knippel\, Colin Malloy\, Emma O’Halloran\, Jeff Richmond\, Stephen Truelove\, and Terry Longshore. The SOU Percussion Ensemble has self-released two CDs\, La Alma del Árbol – The Soul of the Tree\, and Electric Rebel Poetry\, and is featured on two Innova Recordings CDs of the music of Stanford University composer Mark Applebaum: 30 (2015) and Speed Dating (2018)\, as well on the Cantaloupe Music recording of Michael Gordon’s Natural History (2018) and the PBS documentary\, Symphony for Nature (2018). The SOU Percussion Ensemble endorses Vic Firth Sticks and Mallets.

Cleveland’s The Plain Dealer has written that\, “His performance seized attention from first note to last.” Additionally\, The Washington Post stated that his playing had “power and finesse that brought the audience to its feet in a long-standing ovation.” \nPonochevny has received prizes at many international piano competitions\, including the Bronze Medal at the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow\, First Prize at the William Kapell International Piano Competition in Maryland and First Prize at the Tomassoni International Piano Competition in Cologne. His other competition accolades include awards at international competitions in Prague\, Warsaw (Chopin)\, Dublin\, Hong Kong\, Riga and New Orleans. \nAmong his numerous awards\, he was twice named “Outstanding Artist in China” (2009 and 2011)\, “Honorable Professor” of Jilin College of Arts (China) and “Visiting Professor” at Beihua University (China). In his hometown of Minsk (Belarus)\, he was awarded the title “Minskovite of the year” in 2002. \nIn the concert hall\, Ponochevny has garnered equal success having performed extensively in North America\, South America\, Europe and Asia.
