Don’t miss the pre-concert lecture at 6:30pm.

SUMMARY:Chamber Music Concerts Presents the Galvin Cello Quartet
DESCRIPTION:“The Quartet’s cellists are brilliant instrumentalists and thoughtful musicians individually\, but their renditions as a group are glorious.” Arnold Steinhardt\, violinist\, Guarneri String Quartet \nChamber Music Concerts (CMC) presents the Galvin Cello Quartet on Sunday\, November 2 at 3pm at the Southern Oregon University Music Recital Hall\, 450 S Mountain Ave\, Ashland\, OR. Purchase tickets at ChamberMusicConcerts.org or call 541-552-6154. \nA quartet of cellos? This unique ensemble is not often found in the chamber music world\, but has endless possibilities for a group that can play just about anything. Consider their repertoire: programs entitled “Voice of the Piano\,” “A Night at the Opera\,” and outreach offerings that include cartoon medleys and music from La La Land — this is a group that loves to explore and won’t be limited to the usual staples. \nComposed of members from Brazil\, South Korea\, and the United States\, the Galvin Cello Quartet burst onto the scene after capturing the Silver Medal at the 2021 Fischoff Competition\, followed by winning the 2022 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition and joining the Concert Artists Guild roster. The Quartet takes its name from the Mary B. Galvin Recital Hall at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music where three of its members — Sydney Lee\, Haddon Kay\, and Luiz Fernando Venturelli — met as students in the studio of acclaimed pedagogue Hans Jørgen Jensen. In June of 2024\, the Quartet welcomed James Baik\, another former student of Jensen\, as their newest member. \nWith their untamable desire to create\, change\, and ultimately bring joy through music\, the Galvin Cello Quartet is incredibly excited to explore and expand the possibilities of the cello quartet. Using the limitless range of a cello ensemble\, the group’s mission is to bring together new works from diverse cultural backgrounds while seeking to establish the cello quartet as a core part of the classical music world. The Galvin Cello Quartet embodies virtuosity\, with each member bringing their own artistic nuance and acclaimed background to the ensemble. Recent and upcoming highlights include performances and residencies at Bravo! Vail\, Ravinia\, Ascent International Cello Festival\, Newport Classical\, Merkin Hall\, and the Walton Arts Center. \nThe Galvin’s concert program for CMC\, entitled “Voice of the Piano\,” features Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Duet in D Major\, K. 381; Claude Debussy’s Rêverie; Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition; Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in C Minor\, Op. 13 “Pathétique;” André Mehmari’s Forrobodó; Carlos Gardel’s Por Una Cabeza; selections from Robert Schumann’s Kinderszenen\, Op. 15; and George Gershwin’s Three Preludes. \nTickets are $49/59\, with discounts available for full-time students and Oregon Trail Card holders. Purchase online at ChamberMusicConcerts.org or by calling 541-552-6154. Don’t miss the pre-concert lecture at 2pm.

SUMMARY:Chamber Music Concerts & Tutunov Piano Series Present Matous Michal\, Violin & Joseph Yungen\, Piano
DESCRIPTION:Chamber Music Concerts and the Tutunov Piano Series present Matous Michal\, violin\, and Joseph Yungen\, piano\, on Friday\, September 12th at 7:30pm at the Southern Oregon University Music Recital Hall\, 450 S Mountain Ave\, Ashland\, OR. \nPurchase tickets at ChamberMusicConcerts.org or 541-552-6154. \nChamber Music Concerts (CMC) and the Tutunov Piano Series (TPS) are excited to collaborate to present these fine young artists. Joseph Yungen is a former piano student of Dr. Alexander Tutunov\, and was the first winner of CMC’s Music Scholarship at SOU in 2008. After graduating from SOU\, Joseph went on to earn a master’s degree at the Eastman School of Music and a doctorate from the Juilliard School\, and he regularly returns to the Rogue Valley to perform and visit family and friends. When Joseph contacted CMC’s Executive Director\, Jody Schmidt\, about playing on the series\, she saw an opportunity. \n“Joseph is an exceptional pianist\, and he was excited to tell me that he has a duo partner who he said is his ‘favorite violinist.’ He was hoping CMC could present them on our series. Our season schedule was already complete\, but I knew this was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. I spoke with Alexander Tutunov\, and he agreed that this was the perfect concert for CMC and TPS to present together. We decided to donate all proceeds from ticket sales to SOU Music Scholarships.” \nDr. Tutunov has followed his student’s career since his graduation. “He never fails to delight his listeners while educating them with rarely heard yet fantastic repertoire. Joseph is more than just a ‘success story\,’ he has turned into truly a world class musician (who happens to play the piano rather well!). The variety presented on this program is a huge bonus and I know this concert is going to please even the strictest critic.” \nMatous Michal was appointed to the violin section of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra by Maestro Riccardo Muti in February 2016. Prior to joining the CSO\, he held a position in the first violin section of the Grant Park Orchestra. A native of the Czech Republic\, Matous began his violin studies at age four\, and at 14\, he began studies at the Prague Conservatory. After graduating he completed his bachelor’s degree at the Juilliard School and master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music. Since joining the CSO\, Matous has regularly performed new music at the MusicNow series as well as chamber music with his colleagues at the CSO chamber series. \nJoseph Yungen has established an international reputation for his consistent excellence as soloist and collaborator in a wide variety of musical contexts and repertoire. Joseph has served as faculty at the Music Academy of the West\, the New Jersey Young Artist Piano Competition\, and Frostburg State University. Winner of the “Audience Favorite” and “Best Performance of the Music of Szymanowski” awards in the Seattle International Piano Competition\, Joseph received First Prize in the Schubert Club Piano Competition in Minneapolis\, the Pianist’s First Prize in the Jessie Kneisel Lieder Competition\, and the Barr Award for Excellence in Accompanying at the Eastman School of Music. \nThe concert program features Franz Schubert’s Sonata in D Major\, Op. 137 no. 1 (D. 384); Clara Schumann’s Three Romances for Violin and Piano; Bedřich Smetana’s From the Homeland; Charles Ives’ Violin Sonata no. 2; and Bohuslav Martinů’s Violin Sonata no. 3\, H. 303. SUMMARY:MUSIX - Rock Band Winter Concert & Album Release PARTY!
DESCRIPTION:The MUSIX rock band will perform their winter concert on Thursday\, March 13th at 7:30pm. TBD Location. Directed by Dr. Derek Keller. \n$15/ general admission/ $10 seniors. Free for SOU Faculty\, Staff\, and Students. Livestream – https://youtube.com/live/P8qJBl9geBc?feature=share \nABOUT MUSIX & the MIPS Program at SOU \nStudents in MUSIX are performers\, producers\, composers\, lyricists\, and audio engineers. All of the music you will hear tonight is original. Over the course of every term\, MUSIX members pair up\, or consolidate into sub-groups to create music in a variety of ways. Some who read music will partner with those who intuit music\, and vice-versa. The music is sometimes created through an improvisational\, or “by rote” fashion. Other times it is completely conceived\, written out and prepared by a single individual for further development and rehearsal by a band. The MIP Lab is equipped with session mixers that allow up to 5 players to plug in and monitor themselves while rehearsing. Dr. Terry Longshore\, head of percussion at SOU\, has mentioned gleefully that it is a bit like “blissful chaos” when observing the lab full of songwriters\, and two bands rehearsing at the same time in two different keys\, tempos\, and singers – the session mixers allow for near totally isolation through the players’ headphones! All of MUSIX’s compositional approaches\, this music is aimed towards preparing an evening-length concert or to produce audio recordings worthy of release to the masses. Tonight’s concert will feature music from our catalog and several new songs owing to our growing collective of students.

SUMMARY:Chamber Music Concerts Presents the Marmen Quartet
DESCRIPTION:With the courage\, vitality and intensity of its performances\, the Marmen Quartet is fast establishing itself as one of the most impressive and engaging talents in chamber music\, demonstrated by recent first prizes at the prestigious Bordeaux and Banff International String Quartet Competitions. The quartet has performed at leading European venues including Wigmore Hall\, Berlin Philharmonie\, Boulez Saal\, Frankfurt Alte Oper\, Stockholm Konserthuset\, Milton Court (Barbican)\, Palladium Malmö and Muziekgebouw Eindhoven\, with festival appearances at BBC Proms\, Lockenhaus\, Mecklenburg Vorpommern\, Rheingau\, Heidelberg and Zeister Musiekdagen festivals and the Amsterdam\, Barcelona and Gulbenkian Foundation String Quartet Biennale Festivals. \nThe concert program includes Beethoven’s String Quartet in F Minor Op. 95 “Serioso;” Bartók’s String Quartet no. 3; and Mozart’s String Quartet in C Major K. 465 “Dissonance.” \n“What is special about the art of the British ensemble is its committed playing\, the liveliness that does not aim to find a flawlessly distilled sound: Here one experiences a fresh\, honest\, human way of making music. The Marmen Quartet shines\, opens up the work and shows what great music can do: intellectually stimulate and\, above all\, to be moving.” Süddeutsche Zeitung

It was important to his parents\, however\, to raise their boy as a well-rounded person\, so his early years were also spent with school\, table tennis\, and ballroom dancing before focusing on music. \nSince then\, Ilya Shmukler made solo appearances in Europe and North America\, and performed with such artists as Mikhail Pletnev\, Paavo Järvi\, Marin Alsop\, Nicholas McGegan\, Junichi Hirokami\, Anne-Marie McDermott\, Anton Nel and David Radzynski. Collaborations include the Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich\, Musikkollegium Winterthur\, the Mariinsky\, Fort Worth Symphony\, Sendai Philharmonic\, Kansas City Chamber\, Bayer-Symphoniker\, and New Music Orchestras. \nTo have become a finalist and the recipient of the award for the “Best Performance of a Mozart Concerto” at the 2022 Cliburn Competition is a milestone in his career\, as is his New York debut as a winner of the Carnegie Weill Recital Hall Debut Audition in 2022. An alumnus of the Moscow State Conservatoire under the guidance of Elena Kuznetsova and Sergey Kuznetsov\, Ilya continues his studies at Park University (USA) with Stanislav Ioudenitch.

In the final months of his mother Elaine’s late-stage dementia\, gay filmmaker Kyle Henry uses his extensive family archive to travel back in time\, exploring the complicated bonds of identity\, history\, and belonging in his large Texas family. Charting Elaine’s promising early life through her years of motherhood and self-sacrifice\, finally tracing their relationship to its inevitable end\, Time Passages playfully explores Kyle’s conflicting feelings of love\, grief\, guilt\, and helplessness. Beneath the Kodachrome smiles and grainy Super-8 home movies lie the difficult truths that so many families hide. With their unearthing\, Time Passages becomes a memento mori: a testament to love\, legacy and the things that carry us through life’s most challenging times. \nABOUT THE FILMMAKER/WRITER/DIRECTOR: \nFor 30 years\, Kyle has traversed film forms to bring authentic stories of interrelationship to audiences at fests\, theaters\, and streaming platforms. His fictions use documentary methods to devise stories based on research\, creating deeper authenticity. His documentaries use fictional techniques to portray interior worlds of subjective memory and thought. From his SXSW premiered documentaries University Inc.’s exploration of toxic higher-ed corporatization and American Cowboy’s sensitive stereotype toppling portrayal of a gay rodeo champ; to Sundance and Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight premiered fiction feature Room’s psychic journey of a working class woman in post-9/11 America\, Fourplay’s vivid investigation of sexual intimacy\, to Chicago set Rogers Park’s “eye for the intimate\, dividend-paying gesture” (NYTimes) that is “brimming with universal truths” (Chicago Sun-Times)\, his deep mining of human experience has the purposeful goal of facilitating community discussion\, as he tours with all of his works to converse directly with audiences in a variety of settings. Time Passages is his re-emergence as a documentarian after 20 years making fiction films.
