Sean Hayes is a crooner\, a wailer and an escape artist. He plays songs to get you dancing\, sipping\, dreaming and falling. \nBorn in New York\, raised in North Carolina\, with over 30 years playing music in California’s Bay Area\, you can hear a bit of all of these places flowing through the songwriting and his singular voice. \nThese influences are reflected in the many different musicians Sean has played with over the years. From singing duets with Aimiee Mann and Frazey Ford to touring with Charley Crockett\, Jolie Holland\, The Wood Brothers\, Ani DeFranco and The Cold War Kids\, among many others. His songs have been remixed by renowned House DJ Mark Farina and have appeared on NPR\, NBC and HBO. SUMMARY:Hillary Tiefer discusses her new novel The Secret Ranch
DESCRIPTION:After a journalist takes an interest in eighty-five-year-old Jean Warner’s experience as an enemy code interceptor during World War II\, Jean reflects upon her past\, which was often challenging and painful. \nJean relives her experiences during the war when she was in the Women’s Army Corps and did grueling secret work deciphering enemy Morse Code at Two Rock Ranch Station\, near Petaluma\, California. During this time\, she has a challenging friendship with another WAC\, pursues a rocky relationship with a soldier\, and constantly fears for the lives of her two brothers who are fighting in the war. As difficult as it has been to dwell on her past\, Jean eventually realizes that she has acquired insights that have helped her understand herself and strengthened her relationship with her troubled daughter\, who has assumed that her mother conducted her life perfectly. \nHillary Tiefer has a PhD in English and has taught at Southern Oregon University and other colleges in the Pacific Northwest. Her short stories have been published in Descant\, Red Rock Review\, Mission at Tenth\, Blue Moon Literary Review\, Gray Sparrow Journal\, Poetica Magazine\, Poydras Review\, Crack the Spine Literary Magazine\, JuxtaProse\, The Literary Nest\, Smoky Blue Literature and Art Magazine\, Five on the Fifth\, The Opiate\, The Manifest-Station\, Pennsylvania Literary Journal\, and Minerva Rising Press’s The Keeping Room

SUMMARY:Reading from Crush: My Year as an Apprentice Winemaker
DESCRIPTION:In Crush Nicholas O’Connell provides a behind-the-scenes look at the daily operations of some of the world’s most prestigious wineries on the West Coast. \nThis insider’s view of the wine world includes the intense competition for the best grapes\, the bizarre lingo of the tasting rooms\, and the visionary winemakers who magically transform grapes into high-end wine. It is a world that includes not only romance and refinement but long hours\, backbreaking labor\, mind-numbing repetition\, and fanatical dedication to quality. Such devotion resulted in the 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet that won the best red wine at the 1976 Judgment of Paris and transformed the U.S. wine industry. \nO’Connell’s quest to master the art of wine making begins in his garage. From there he embarks on an apprenticeship at Betz and DeLille Cellar and other great wineries in California\, Oregon\, and Washington. He provides a first-person\, ground-up view of a business not yet fully explored despite record interest in wine. O’Connell also includes conversations with some of the world’s most gifted vintners\, including Warren Winiarski\, former owner of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars.

SUMMARY:RVML presents : Maturing Our Relationship to Technology with Beni Oren
DESCRIPTION:“Finding attentional sovereignty in an age of digital distraction.” \nThis is the tale of our time. As implied by the name of the presentation\, we currently have an immature relationship to technology that is guided by naivete\, selfishness\, and addiction. Whether it’s weapons of mass destruction or distraction\, they are expressions of our collective lack of wisdom. \nTechnology is an inextricable part of humanity\, and we must learn to have a healthier relationship with it. We are being tested to see if we deserve continuance in the Universe. We can only save the world and pass one down worth living in if we cultivate the love and wisdom needed to be responsible stewards of our godlike technology. \nCome and learn about what technology is and what its optimal role in human civilization could look like. We need as many people as possible to have these conversations. \nWhat are the origins of technology/ why do we have tech\, and all the other species don’t?\nHow technology affects society in complex and unseen ways\nThe rise of the internet\, the iPhone\, and social media\nThe intricacies of how our phones damage our mental and physical health\nWhat conditions make us susceptible to addiction\, vs what conditions make us more sovereign?\nWhat role should technology play in a healthy and harmonious civilization?\nSome tips for how to find technological balance\n“We have paleolithic emotions\, medieval institutions\, and godlike technology.” – E.O. Wilson. \nBeni Oren is a writer\, speaker\, and facilitator. His facilitation skills range from meditation to qigong to intentional communication practices. He is a systems theorist and social philosopher concerned with designing a regenerative civilization. He is a culture architect interested in seeing a world where we collectively and harmoniously reach our highest potential. \nHe grew up on the beautiful beaches of Southern California. His journey began with a transformative meditation retreat at 19 years old\, which opened his eyes to the great mystery and inherent beauty within all of life. Since then\, he has lived his life seeking to understand global suffering and how we can create the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.

SUMMARY:Climate Action Workshop Series – Composting
DESCRIPTION:Some ten years ago\, spurred into action by students at Ashland High School\, among others\, Mayor John Stromberg and the Ashland City Council establishment of a citizen committee assigned to develop a climate plan for the city. \nUltimately titled the Ashland Climate and Energy Action Plan (CEAP)\, this was passed unanimously by the city council in 2017. The goals of the plan were to reduce community greenhouse gas emissions and prepare the city to be more resilient to climate change impacts. As the Ashland Climate Collaborative notes on their website: “Eight years in\, the CEAP is still a great foundation for reaching our climate goals.” \nAs the CEAP itself states: “This Climate and Energy Action Plan is only the beginning of an ongoing process.” Regrettably\, over the intervening years\, as families relocate\, residential awareness of the CEAP seems to have dwindled to the point that many are completely unaware of its existence. \nIn order to address this lack of awareness\, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now Executive Director Danial Scotton\, assisted by members of the SOCAN Ashland Climate Action Team\, have established a series of open public workshops during which aspects of the CEAP are discussed in relation to CEAP goals\, the current status of action\, and what needs to be done. \nThis will be held in the Gresham Room of Ashland Public Library on September 24 from 6:00 – 7:30 in the Gresham Room of the Ashland Public Library.

SUMMARY:Thursday Evening Calm Abiding Meditaion
DESCRIPTION:This meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \n“From this practice\, we can experience a stable and calm mind. We learn to maintain and return to a sense of stillness\, no matter what our outer circumstances. The mind is relaxed\, alert and aware. The results of this practice are serenity\, freedom in the face of circumstances\, and ultimately Buddhahood.” \nFrom Meditation for Beginners\, by Bokar Rinpoche. \nTo attend Calm Abiding Meditation via Zoom\, email the office at OFFICE@KSCASHLAND.ORG to join the mailing list. \n
