SUMMARY:Ashland author Bruce McConnell explores Crows Calling: An Inspiring Journey into our Better Natures
DESCRIPTION:Special pre-release event for crow-admirers (and anyone who loves the Earth)! \nAshland author Bruce McConnell explores “Crows Calling: An Inspiring Journey into our Better Natures\,” his uplifting novel about our relationships with the natural world and each other in the face of climate change. \n“A parable of wisdom and kindness told through the eyes of the living world.” —Paul Hawken \nEarth’s animals are fed up with humanity’s mindless damage to our common home. Will a young girl and her family heed their call? \nTen-year-old Luz sets out on an overnight camping trip\, accompanied by her spiritual mentor. Peering through a canopy of California redwoods\, Luz witnesses a council of animals confronting the menace of climate change. Led by a lustrous—and talkative—crow named Koro\, the animals weigh their options. Some\, like Koro\, want to collaborate with humans. Others doubt humanity’s good intentions. The conversation compels young Luz\, innately in tune with the natural world\, to fight passionately in its defense. \nAt once a work of fact-based activism and a moving coming-of-age\, “Crows Calling” immerses the reader in a richly drawn family and community who\, despite their differences\, decide to dedicate their lives to the care of Grandmother Earth. They are not alone. Rather\, they are accompanied by a colorful cast of savvy planimals—trees\, coyotes\, chickens\, and even lichens—with long memories and ancient ways of healing. \nSome damage cannot be undone. Natural disasters\, public apathy\, and greed threaten everything that Luz and her friends are working for. Can the cross-species alliance find unity and resolve the climate crisis? \nBruce McConnell is an agile shapeshifter\, having flourished as a poet\, roofer\, artist-blacksmith\, engineer\, tenor\, consultant\, national security official\, non-profit executive\, and peacemaker. He sings in the Rogue Valley Peace Choir.

SUMMARY:RVML Tuesday Night Lecture Series: The Doctrine of Signatures - Listening to Nature's Language with Tricia Amara
DESCRIPTION:This lecture introduces participants to the Doctrine of Signatures — an ancient approach that suggests a plant’s appearance offers insight into its healing properties. \nThis is a way of seeing plants as teachers\, each bearing visible signs of their healing gifts. Rooted in Hermetic philosophy\, folk tradition\, and deep observation\, this presentation invites participants to attune to the symbolic language of the green world. \nExplore the historical roots of this concept\, its use in both folk and clinical herbalism\, and practical examples of plant signatures that connect form with function. \nThrough stories and clinical examples\, learn about how the colors\, shapes\, and gestures of a plant offer clues to its purpose. \nTricia bridges traditional wisdom and contemporary herbal practice\, offering both inspiration and useful frameworks for herbalists\, students\, and plant lovers alike. \nTricia Amara is a clinical herbalist with over 30 years of experience in herbology\, nutrition\, and holistic healing. A professional member of the American Herbalists Guild\, her approach combines deep-rooted traditional wisdom with evidence-based practice.

SUMMARY:Thursday Evening Calm Abiding Meditaion
DESCRIPTION:This meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \n“From this practice\, we can experience a stable and calm mind. We learn to maintain and return to a sense of stillness\, no matter what our outer circumstances. The mind is relaxed\, alert and aware. The results of this practice are serenity\, freedom in the face of circumstances\, and ultimately Buddhahood.” \nFrom Meditation for Beginners\, by Bokar Rinpoche. \nTo attend Calm Abiding Meditation via Zoom\, email the office at OFFICE@KSCASHLAND.ORG to join the mailing list. \n

SUMMARY:Walk through Jacksonville History
DESCRIPTION:Jacksonville’s “Walk through History” tours are back! \nAt 10 a.m. every Saturday from May 24th through August 30th\, Historic Jacksonville\, Inc. will be offering one-hour guided walks through Jacksonville’s National Historic Landmark District\, the first on the West Coast! Participants will take a stroll through history\, visiting government and commercial buildings\, fraternal lodges\, and homes that capture the stories of the people who transformed a gold rush town into Southern Oregon’s 19th Century social\, governmental\, and commercial hub. They’ll learn how gambling money built a church; how the Civil War ended a successful mercantile partnership; how a saloon housed the county’s first museum; how fire reshaped the town; and how a railroad both destroyed the town and preserved it. \nWalking tours leave from Jacksonville’s New City Hall (the historic “Courthouse Square”) at 206 North 5th Street between West C and D streets and cover about one mile with multiple stops. Tours are FREE but donations are encouraged! All monies go towards the preservation and maintenance of Jacksonville’s historic buildings. \nFor individuals who prefer not to “stretch their legs\,” Historic Jacksonville’s website (https://www.historicjacksonville.org) offers numerous ways to explore Jacksonville virtually. These include multiple blogs about the town and its settlers along with three video tours that introduce viewers to Jacksonville’s Historic Landmark District\, its Historic Homes\, and its Pioneer Cemetery. \nHistoric Jacksonville\, Inc. invites you to forget the “names\, dates\, places\, and battles” version of history you may have been taught in school. HJI’s live and virtual tours are about “real history”—people and their stories. They are about life! \nAdditional information on “Walk through History” and other Historic Jacksonville\, Inc. tours is available at 541-245-3650; info@historicjacksonville.org; and www.historicjacksonville.org.

SUMMARY:Beekman Bank Museum tours
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to “Step Behind the Counter” of the oldest financial institution in the Pacific Northwest—Jacksonville’s 1863 Beekman Bank Museum—when Historic Jacksonville\, Inc. opens the museum for summer tours. \nEstablished as a “gold dust” office in 1856\, it was the first “bank” north of San Francisco. \nScheduled 2025 “banking hours” are 11am to 3 pm\, Saturdays and Sundays\, from May 24 through August 31. The Beekman Bank Museum is located at 110 W. California Street (the corner of California and North 3rd streets) in Jacksonville. Guests can interact with costumed docents sharing stories of late 19th Century banking practices\, gold shipping\, and handshake deals; step behind the counter and peer in drawers containing old checks\, stage schedules\, and paperwork; and enter the vault that stored millions in gold! \nVisitors can spend as much or as little time as they like—although we suggest they allow at least 30 minutes. Tours are FREE\, but donations are encouraged since all monies go towards the preservation and maintenance of this historic legacy! \nThe original bank was established in 1856 as a “gold dust” office. (If we’re factual\, it was a safe.) Cornelius Beekman had come to Jacksonville in 1854 as an express rider between Yreka and Jacksonville carrying newspaper\, mail\, parcels\, and gold over the Siskiyous. When his employer’s firm failed\, he established Jacksonville’s Beekman’s Express and his gold dust office. In 1863 he became Jacksonville’s Wells Fargo agent and constructed the Beekman Bank. \nDuring Jacksonville’s heyday as the governmental\, commercial\, and social hub of Southern Oregon in the late 1800s\, the Beekman’s Bank saw over $40 million in gold cross its counters—equivalent to over $1 billion today! The current 1863 structure is the only commercial wooden building on California Streeet to survive Jacksonville’s many fires. It has been preserved intact as a museum since Cornelius Beekman\, the wealthiest and most prominent of Jacksonville’s pioneers\, locked the doors in 1915. \nAdditional information is available at 541-245-3650; info@historicjacksonville.org; and www.historicjacksonville.org/behind-the-counter/.
