SUMMARY:ART ON FIRST: An Artful Life\, Solo Exhibition John Palombo
DESCRIPTION:Currently featured at ART on FIRST are nature inspired paintings by John Palombo. With just enough challenges growing up to gain some deep colors and spectrums in his life\, John has made use of the follies and torture of being human and turned them into joy and happiness by finding something that truly speaks to his soul – visiting remote natural areas and painting. \nJohn loves color and creating color. His focus has always been on landscapes of Southern Oregon\, particularly Southeastern Oregon. When creating a composition\, John’s interest is to translate the magic that he sees in the world and in nature onto his surface. With this\, he hopes to inspire his viewers to find the same magic\, or something that is personal to just them. \nFor more information\, please visit www.artonfirstashland.com. \nMonday\, March 31 – Monday\, April 28\, 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. \nOpening Reception: Friday\, April 4\, 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Mary Silva discusses her new novel “No Small Thing”
DESCRIPTION:Jean Ann Johnson and Margaret Meriwether are as unalike as any two women can be. When circumstances bring them together at a senior living community\, they begin a journey of discovery – about themselves and each other – that surprises them both. Along the way\, they encounter quirky characters and a host of adventures\, many the small everyday kind\, but all of them significant enough to forge a deep friendship that changes them in profound ways. \nNo Small Thing invites you to come along as Jean Ann and Margaret navigate the ups and downs of life in the later years. Their antics will surprise and delight you\, and maybe even evoke a few tears along the way. It’s a journey you won’t soon forget.

SUMMARY:Thursday Evening Calm Abiding Meditaion
DESCRIPTION:This meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \n“From this practice\, we can experience a stable and calm mind. We learn to maintain and return to a sense of stillness\, no matter what our outer circumstances. The mind is relaxed\, alert and aware. The results of this practice are serenity\, freedom in the face of circumstances\, and ultimately Buddhahood.” \nFrom Meditation for Beginners\, by Bokar Rinpoche. \nTo attend Calm Abiding Meditation via Zoom\, email the office at OFFICE@KSCASHLAND.ORG to join the mailing list. \n

SUMMARY:The Disparity Art Show by Gabriel Lipper
DESCRIPTION:The Disparity— Amidst glimmering seas and smoke-stained skies\, figures lounge and flee. \nIn this haunting collection\, opulence drifts beside the remnants of escape. Beautiful surfaces reveal uneasy truths. Lipper’s paintings move between tenderness and tension\, inviting us to question not only what we’re seeing\, but where we’re standing. \nSet against the backdrop of The Columbia Hotel\, this show challenges us to look closely at privilege\, struggle\, and the fragile space in between. \nThe Columbia Hotel\n262 E Main Street\, Ashland\nFriday\, May 2nd 5pm to 8pm \nhttps://www.columbiahotelashland.com/events-calendar/the-disparity-gabriel-lipper-art-show

SUMMARY:A Weekend Teaching with Lama Sarah Harding: The Total Flowering of Activity to Help Others; Profound Instructions of the Glorious Shangpa Kagyu
DESCRIPTION:In the 1970s\, the late\, great Kalu Rinpoche traveled extensively in the West\, including North America. Where there was interest among those listening to these early teachings\, Rinpoche gave the Chenrezig empowerment and recommended this service as a daily practice for anyone interested in Tibetan Buddhism and the strengthening of compassion. It had long been practiced at his monastery in India. \nLama Sarah will introduce the meditation\, and we will do the practice during the weekend. It includes The Four Thoughts Which Turn the Mind toward the Dharma\, Refuge and Bodhicitta\, and visualizing Chenrezig\, the Bodhisattva of Compassion\, as well as your primary teacher. \nThe practice unfolds as we meditate on compassion for all beings\, utilizing both Chenrezig’s mantra\, and the Tonglen practice of welcoming and offering. The meditation concludes with a renewing of concern for all beings and a dedication of the benefits of the practice to them. \nEspecially for this teaching visit\, Lama Sarah is providing a new edition of the service\, including a new translation. The wisdom dakini Niguma is associated with this practice\, so Lama Sarah will also teach on her translation of Niguma’s Aspiration Prayer. \nThis weekend will introduce the visualization style of meditation\, as well as the chance to deepen one’s connection to two compassion practices — Chenrezig and Tonglen. The teachings are suitable for those interested in learning more about either of these styles of meditation\, as well as those drawn to a new expression of compassion practice. \nSarah Harding has been studying and practicing Buddhism since 1974\, and has been teaching and translating since completing a three-year retreat in 1980 under the guidance of Kyabjé Kalu Rinpoché. She was associate professor at Naropa University for twenty-five years in Boulder\, Colorado\, where she currently resides\, and has been a fellow of the Tsadra Foundation since 2000. She specializes in literature with a focus on tantric practice. Her publications include Ornament of Dakpo Kagyu Thought; Creation and Completion; The Treasury of Knowledge: Esoteric Instructions; Niguma\, Lady of Illusion; and two volumes on Chö and Shijé from The Treasury of Precious Instructions. \nMay 2nd – 4th \nFriday\, 6:00 – 7:00 pm\nSaturday & Sunday\, 10:00 am – noon & 2:00 – 4:00 pm \nIn-person & via Zoom
