SUMMARY:“Mortal Zin: A Mystery Novel” with author Diane Schaffer
DESCRIPTION:A crusading attorney’s death. Sabotage at a family winery. Secrets buried in California’s past… \nWhen corporate attorney Noli Cooper visits her godparents’ Santa Cruz Mountain winery\, she’s hoping for a few quiet days to consider her future. But the future will have to wait. The body of her childhood mentor\, a crusading social justice lawyer and local hero\, is discovered in a rocky ocean cove. The sheriff is quick to call it suicide. Noli knows he’s wrong. Teaming up with PI Luz Alvarado\, Noli dives into a world where nothing is as it seems. \nAs threats mount and the winery teeters on the brink of ruin\, Noli and Luz must navigate a treacherous landscape of greed\, revenge\, and long-buried secrets. Their investigation weaves through the rich tapestry of California’s vineyard history\, the mystery of zinfandel grapes\, and the haunting legacy of the Vietnam War. With a murderer on the loose\, predatory neighbors circling\, and Noli’s godfather framed for murder\, the clock is ticking. Can two fearless women from different worlds unravel the truth before it’s too late? \nDiane Schaffer\, a Stanford PhD\, is a retired professor and longtime resident of Santa Cruz County. Mortal Zin\, her first mystery novel\, is rooted in her summer work in a Santa Cruz zinfandel winery\, where she became fascinated with the unique history of zinfandel\, California’s mystery grape. When she’s not writing\, she’s hiking\, river kayaking\, or reading a good mystery novel. She now lives in Ashland\, Oregon\, with her husband. \nMonday April 7th 7:00 to 8:00 pm

SUMMARY:Windows in Time: Restoring the Holly Theatre\, Who and How\, with George Kramer
DESCRIPTION:The Holly Theatre opened in 1930\, screened its last movie in 1986\, and was near demolition by 2002. Purchased by JeffersonLive in 2011\, its restoration has been a long and fascinating journey\, interrupted by COVID and other hurdles. This spring\, the theatre reopened after a multi-million dollar restoration that has returned and updated its original interior and exterior for live performance use. George Kramer\, the project’s restoration specialist\, will take you behind the scenes\, detailing how local craftspeople recreated missing elements and accommodated code requirements and safety issues\, all while maintaining the theatre’s historic character. Profusely illustrated with before\, in process\, and after images\, learn how one of the largest restoration projects in Medford’s history happened and about the talented artists who did the work. \nAshland resident George Kramer\, with a background in history and architecture\, has worked to document and restore historic buildings throughout the Pacific Northwest for over three decades. He wrote the nomination documents for downtown Grants Pass\, downtown Medford\, and all four of the historic districts in Ashland. In addition to the restoration of the Holly\, George served as the historic consultant for the Liberty Theatre\, in North Bend\, the Egyptian Theatre\, in Coos Bay\, the Alger Theatre in Lakeview\, and the Cascade Theatre\, in Redding\, California among dozens of other commercial projects. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays\, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays\, in-person). Registration is only required to attend the Zoom version of Medford’s program. Recordings of Medford presentations are available on the JCLS Beyond YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Thursday Evening Calm Abiding Meditaion
DESCRIPTION:This meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \n“From this practice\, we can experience a stable and calm mind. We learn to maintain and return to a sense of stillness\, no matter what our outer circumstances. The mind is relaxed\, alert and aware. The results of this practice are serenity\, freedom in the face of circumstances\, and ultimately Buddhahood.” \nFrom Meditation for Beginners\, by Bokar Rinpoche. \nTo attend Calm Abiding Meditation via Zoom\, email the office at OFFICE@KSCASHLAND.ORG to join the mailing list. \n

Come\, be a pilgrim the first six of the seven Fridays in Lent. Join us at noon on Fridays beginning March 7 and concluding on April 11 in the Sanctuary. \nSee more at https://www.trinitychurchashland.org/ or https://www.facebook.com/TrinityAshland/.
