SUMMARY:Windows in Time: Tales of the Oregon Country
DESCRIPTION:Author Carole Nielson\, who has published several articles for Wild West Magazine and written several history books\, will speak about her book Tales of the Oregon Country\, which includes 12 short stories of Oregon History. She has also written Five Bucks for a Quarter and Notorious Women of the Wild West. \nCarole Nielson acquired a passionate interest in history\, especially “Old West” history\, from her parents\, Earl and Frankie Sheppard. Although born in Oklahoma\, she has lived in southern Oregon since 1947\, with the exception of three years spent in France where she worked for NATO\, the US Air Force and the US Army. An enthusiastic traveler\, she and her husband\, Dan\, have toured over 40 countries. They also entertain at retirement centers and senior centers playing music and giving talks on travel and history. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays\, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays\, in-person). Recordings of Medford presentations are available on the JCLS Beyond YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Vajrayana for Our Times (Part 2): A Hybrid Teaching with devon + nico hase
DESCRIPTION:For many householders in the West\, Vajrayana practices can feel out of reach. While we may love the values and the deep potential of the tradition\, it can be difficult to weave the meditations into our own everyday perceptions and experiences. \nHow do we make these practices our own while fully respecting the blessings of the lineage? \nWhen we came together around this topic last June\, we explored the role of intention\, the power of the fruitional view\, and how to “find your juice.” This time we’re going to lean into themes like fundamental well-being\, the power of sacred outlook\, and the dynamic tension between faith and not-knowing. \nAgain\, we’ll lean into our own experience of nearly three decades of dharma practice and the three-year retreat we experienced under the guidance of Lama Drubgyu and Mingyur Rinpoche\, completed in the summer of 2023. \nWe look forward to practicing with you\, as we find out together how depth practice can continue to thrive in these times. \nA selection of soups\, salads\, and bread will be available in the lobby during the noon break\, with tables set up so that we can eat together. Come nourish yourself\, stay warm\, and relax in the company of other participants. This lunch is both a fundraiser for KSC and an opportunity to enjoy casual interaction with the sangha. A donation of $15 is suggested\, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. \nAbout the teachers:\ndevon + nico hase completed the three-year Shangpa retreat cycle last year\, under the guidance of Lama Drubgyu Tenzin and Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. They have spent years in retreat in the Insight\, Zen\, and Vajrayana traditions. They teach online and in-person\, mentor meditation teachers\, lead retreats at Insight Meditation Society\, Spirit Rock and other centers\, and work one-on-one with long-term students.
