SUMMARY:Shari Lane talks about her new novel “Two Over Easy All Day Long”
DESCRIPTION:Giles Anthony Maurice Gibson\, Manhattanite and president of ABC Toys\, floats through life on a cloud of wealth and privilege. Until now. When his company’s negligence results in tragedy\, the judge\, weary of a world where justice is rarely served\, sentences Giles to a year of community service in rural Oregon\, and supervised work at Sunnyside Up\, a local diner. Renamed “Tony\,” and fitted with an ankle monitor to keep him in his place\, he must find a way to make amends for the consequences of always choosing the easy way. \nShortly after Giles-learning-to-be-Tony arrives\, the curmudgeonly cook finds a dead body in the dumpster behind the restaurant. Tony and the other misfits at the diner are soon suspects\, but—though they will eventually work together to figure out “whodunnit”—Two Over Easy All Day Long isn’t a murder mystery\, it’s a human mystery\, asking how far a person can bend before breaking\, and whether breaking isn’t the point\, after all. \nShari Lane grew up in Ashland (mostly)\, and now lives on Lopez Island\, Washington (a magical island in the Salish Sea). Shari is a graduate of Ashland Senior High\, University of Oregon\, University of Washington\, and Lewis & Clark College\, and her careers have included attorney\, preschool director\, and middle school Latin teacher. Shari’s short stories have appeared in Adelaide Literary Magazine\, Evening Street Review\, Antithesis (forthcoming)\, Cape Magazine\, and others. Whenever possible\, Shari surrounds herself with books\, readers\, and writers. Shari is Managing Editor of SHARK REEF Literary Magazine\, a library trustee\, and the host of a monthly open mic for writers. For more information about Shari and Two Over Easy All Day Long\, including upcoming events\, and to sign up for monthly newsletters\, go to www.sharilane.com. Follow Shari on Facebook\, Instagram (@readwritebreathe)\, and (soon!) YouTube. \nMonday October 7th 7:00 to 8:00 pm

SUMMARY:Windows in Time: Life in Kerby\, Oregon: A Retrospective on the Turbulent 1960s
DESCRIPTION:During its glory days\, Kerby was the county seat\, boasting two hotels\, several saloons\, a jail\, a school\, and one of Oregon’s earliest post offices. Presenter Paul Fattig’s maternal grandmother\, Lela Ingersoll Cooke\, owned and lived in the historic Naucke house before it became part of the Kerbyville Museum and History Center. \nFattig describes himself as a recovering print journalist who fell off the wagon and started writing books. His first three rolled easily forth but the fourth one—focusing on his chaotic\, formative years in Kerby—is a mite reluctant to greet the world. Yet it is nearly completed\, and he looks forward to talking about those interesting years when the counterculture arrived in the then largely conservative Illinois Valley. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and brings alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays\, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays\, in-person). Recordings of Medford presentations are available on the JCLS Beyond YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Willi Carlisle with special guest DUG presented by the Ashland Folk Collective
DESCRIPTION:For folksinger Willi Carlisle\, singing is healing. And by singing together\, he believes we can begin to reckon with the inevitability of human suffering and grow in love. On his latest album\, Critterland\, Carlisle invites audiences to join him: “If we allow ourselves to sing together\, there’s a release of sadness\, maybe even a communal one. And so for me personally\, singing\, like the literal act of thinking through suffering\, is really freeing\,” he says. \nDUG \nStarted in October 2023\, DUG is the new musical venture of songwriter Lorkin O’Reilly and California native Jonny Pickett. \nHaving spent the past decade in Upstate NY releasing albums and touring extensively\, Conor (Lorkin O’Reilly) moved to Dublin in 2022 to start a new musical chapter. Drawing inspiration from both Irish and American traditional music\, DUG aims to create a transatlantic blend that reflects the musical heritages of both its members. \nDoors 6:00pm | Show 7:00-10:00pm \n$30 online | $35 at the door \nCedarwood Barn will serve Wine & Beer | Rogue Food Unites is serving food \nNo outside food or drinks! \nNo pets! \nBring your own seating- outdoor show! \nKids under 12 free for outdoor show.

SUMMARY:Creative Industries Discussion: Christine Hudson
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, October 10 at 2 pm for a Creative Industries Discussion with our 2024 SOU VAST (Visiting Artist & Scholar in Teaching) resident Christine Hudson. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nChristine Hudson is an artist that works in ceramics\, sculpture\, performance and installation. Their art situates personal narrative as an entry point to integrate discussions of community\, care\, resistance\, and resilience. Their utilization of objects and space investigate the ways visual language can be employed as a powerful tool for archiving histories that are often erased\, overlooked\, or rendered silent. By highlighting the subtle tensions between the varying degrees of visibility\, their practice imagines a rethinking of what preserving these marginalized untold stories entails\, creating a space for healing\, remembrance\, and empowerment. These explorations prompt viewers to reflect on the enduring influence of history and traditions on our lives and collective consciousness. \nMore Information at christinejhudson.com \nFree event parking is available in designated lots. \nThursday\, October 10\, 2024 from 2-3 PM\nSOU Meese Auditorium – Art Building (next to the SMA)\n555 Indiana Street | Ashland OR 97520\nFREE\, and open to the public | FREE Parking

SUMMARY:Welcome to Fall & Newcomers' Night
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for Calm Abiding Meditation at 6:00 pm\, followed by a talk by Lama Pema and Lama Yeshe. They will provide an introduction to Buddhism and give an overview of the upcoming programs offered at KSC. All are welcome. Bring your questions about the season’s events! \nAfter the guided meditation practice\, there will be a welcome and introduction to the classes and offerings this fall and winter. This gathering is sometimes lovingly called “Newcomers’ Night” because it is a great way for new people to meet sangha members and learn about the many ways to become involved at KSC. Simultaneously\, many long-time members also like to attend to celebrate the start of a new season of deep and rich learning. \nCalm Abiding meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \nTo attend Calm Abiding Meditation via Zoom\, email the office at OFFICE@KSCASHLAND.ORG to join the mailing list.

DESCRIPTION:When we think of poverty\, we often think of an absence of material wealth. However\, a deeper and more pervasive poverty is an absence of community and mutuality.
