SUMMARY:PACING: Photographs by Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon University’s Schneider Museum of Art (SMA) is thrilled to announce its summer exhibition\, “PACING: Photographs by Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak.” \nThe exhibition will open at 5 p.m. on Thursday\, June 13\, and will be on view through August 10\, 2024. \nAbout the Exhibition: \nThe act of pacing involves moving forward in a measured\, rhythmic manner\, where each step is taken in consideration of the one before it. “PACING” explores this duality of ease and tension through the lens-based works of three midcareer\, female-identifying photographers: Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak. Each artist employs performative methods to document their bodies and those of others\, reflecting on their relationships to social histories\, expectations\, and structures. \nMeet the Artists: \nMelanie Flood has used the camera as a tool for self-expression throughout her life. Her photographs\, spanning from childhood to the present\, explore her evolving femininity and critique gender constructs through a blend of vulnerability and playful experimentation. \nTarrah Krajnak reclaims the photographic medium’s masculine history through her Indigenous transracial adoptee experience. Her interrelated works use the body to reenact lost histories\, employing rituals and performances to create a continuous connection between her presence\, the work’s origins\, and its future. \nDru Donovan highlights the strength and ability of the female body in both athletes and caregivers. Her crisp black-and-white images juxtapose the force and endurance required for various actions\, emphasizing the interdependence and mutual responsibility inherent in these roles. \nMore information: https://sma.sou.edu/exhibitions/pacing-photographs-by-dru-donovan-melanie-flood-and-tarrah-krajnak/ \nImage: Dru Donovan\, Liberty Pose\, 2017\, Video loop\, 35 x 57 inches\, courtesy of the artist.

SUMMARY:Beyond Botox: A Holistic Perspective on Aging by Megan Doty
DESCRIPTION:Would you love to look good at any age without invasive procedures? Would you like to be more beautiful through holistic and non-invasive approaches? \nLearn to create a continuous cycle of good health and beauty. Regardless of our age\, we women value beauty. We have been taught\, what’s reinforced in popular culture\, to put our attractiveness and beauty at the forefront of our minds. And seek it at any cost. So pervasive and accepted is this construct that it has spawned and maintained numerous multi–billion companies feeding off women’s insecurities and desire for a quick fix at the cost of health. \nThe challenge of what’s widely accepted as beauty enhancement options are that Fillers\, Botox\, surgeries\, lasers and plastic surgery are invasive and challenge the body. Our faces aren’t meant to accommodate foreign materials. For example\, any amount of filler will stretch skin\, making it look tighter in the short term\, but more elastic in the long term. Short term improvements aren’t consolation for the financial costs or severe health risks. \nMegan honors every path and urges anyone considering these treatments to understand their risks\, costs and consequences. The good news is that if you understand your body\, learn healthy behavior\, and stimulate your body’s natural healing abilities without challenging them\, it is possible to look naturally and authentically beautiful.\nBeing present with her patients and audiences is the basis of Megan’s holistic approach to improving their health and beauty. \nLearn About:\n• What the latest science says about Botox and fillers\n• Natural and effective treatment options for the signs of aging.\n• How to get that glow and look younger than most people your age without Botox\, fillers\, and lasers.\n• Learn about the #1 hottest trend in holistic beauty \nMegan Doty‘s interest in anti-aging and longevity began during her 15-year journey as an acupuncturist\, sparked by her own aging concerns. Early on in life\, influenced by her mother’s belief in her healing abilities\, she explored various healing modalities\, ultimately specializing in Chinese Medicine. \nMegan’s academic path led her from rural Colorado to training at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine (OCOM)\, where she integrated Eastern and Western medicine and became a Licensed Acupuncturist\, earning her Masters of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine. With a background in yoga\, dance\, and music\, Megan emphasizes energy flow in her practice\, aiming to empower others towards a balanced life. \nOver the past decade\, she has successfully treated diverse conditions\, from pain relief to mental health issues\, with a global practice spanning from Spain to Southern Oregon\, where she currently serves her community with passion. \nFREE ADMISSION – 1757 Ashland St.\, Ashland\, OR. SUMMARY:Sandra Scofield talks about her new novel Little Ships
DESCRIPTION:After adolescent sisters Juni and Tilde Becker wake up one morning to find their mother dead\, their grandmothers appear the very next day to scoop up the girls and their inconsolable father\, Nick\, and take them home to small-town Oregon. The women are full of loving resolve\, but good intentions are small guns against the waves of adolescence and the young family’s shocking history. Besides\, the women\, at ages sixty and seventy\, are at their own crossroads. Across the months of spring\, Nick reels from heartbreak and guilt; the sisters drift apart in the shoals of middle school; three marriages are tested; and the grandmothers seek new footing–in their own lives and with each other. There’s no best way forward\, but making-do offers the girls–who need it most–a path to the future\, and the women discover they have surprising futures of their own yet to live. \nSandra Scofield is the author 8 novels\, a memoir (Occasions of Sin)\, a book of essays\, a book of stories (Swim: Stories of the Sixties)\, a chapbook\, This Is Not a Novel\, and the craft books The Scene Book and The Last Draft: A Novelist’s Guide to Revision. She is the recipient of numerous awards\, including nominations for the NBA (finalist)\, Oregon Book Award (finalist)\, the Willa Cather Award (finalist) and the Texas Institute of Letters Book Award (winner). She has taught in the Iowa Summer Writing Festival for 30 years\, and is one of the founding faculty of Lasell University’s Solstice MFA Program.

SUMMARY:Forest Defender Training Series: Hike & Write
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a shaded\, moderate 2.5 mile hike in the Ashland Watershed along the Snark trail in Ashland. \nDuring the hike we will learn about the Northwest Forest plan\, which guides how parts of the Ashland Watershed is managed. After the hike we will enjoy snacks and a beverage at Skout Taphouse and learn how to write effective letters to the editor. \nThe Forest Service is currently in the process of updating the Northwest Forest Plan for the first time in 30 years\, and we need to advocate for strong protections for our old-growth forests. We will walk you through the process of formatting and submitting your letter and provide templates. Writing letters to the editor is an important and impactful way to advocate for the future of our forests. \nSubmitted pieces provide an additional line of communication with decision makers and help to raise awareness of the issues and encourage folks to take action. With your help\, we can keep the drumbeat up on the importance of updating the Northwest Forest Plan! \nSign up at https://www.kswild.org/upcoming-events/2024forestdefendertrainingcomments-7jp72 for more details about location and what to bring. \nIf you need help filling out an event form or other accommodations\, please call Allee Gustafson\, our Events and Volunteer Manager\, at 541-488-5789\, extension 1014. Advance notice is necessary to arrange for some accessibility needs.

SUMMARY:Braver Angels FREE Depolarizing Within Workshop In-Person
DESCRIPTION:Building Bridgers is partnering with Braver Angels in offering their powerful FREE workshop DEPOLARIZING WITHIN. \nWe risk fueling the fire that threatens our country by how we talk about people who hold different political views. Want to understand how to talk differently? Why? \nBecause we need to find a solution to our nation’s big problems; we cannot do that if we see the “other side” as enemies or strangers. There is a lot of stress these days among families and friends who are divided politically. \nProcess:\nLearn what is involved in developing attitudes\, words\, and using ways to talk with folks on the “other” side with whom we share a national past and future. \nGoals:\nDiscover how to be more aware of your own “inner polarizations”; learn how to be critical without demonizing\, dismissing\, or stereotyping; understand how to handle political and social conversations with peers when these turn to contempt or ridicule for people with different views. https://braverangels.org/\n* * * * * * *\nComplementary food and beverages will be served. Eventbrite registration is required: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/depolarizing-within-southern-oregon-alliancebuilding-bridgers-registration-891329940847?aff=oddtdtcreator&discount=BRAVER

Click here to buy tickets: bit.ly/3wZnjUa. \nHANLEY FARM — “Don’t yuk my yum!” Rogue Valley Farm to School educator Meghan Murphy reminds a bushel of third graders from Central Point as they gather for lunch at Hanley Farm\, just outside Jacksonville. On the menu today: radishes. \nStarted in 2009\, Rogue Valley Farm to School (RVF2S) is part of a national network that connects schools\, local farmers\, and communities\, cultivating healthy kids and local economies alike. \nIn this enormously successful program\, students gain access to healthy local foods\, to be sure. But they also gain educational opportunities that include weekly classes — taught by a member of the RVF2S staff — about living and eating healthy\, school gardens\, cooking lessons\, and farms visits\, two per year. \nEach month\, school-based educators also serve samples of a local\, seasonal fruit or vegetable to students in their own cafeteria. This month\, the featured vegetable has been — you guessed it — radishes. \n“Everything we do is about building a culture of health\, about forging relationships and connections around growing food\,” says co-executive director Rebecca Slosberg. The economic benefits are real\, too. A recent study by the nonprofit Ecotrust found that for every dollar allocated through Oregon’s Farm to School program for procurement of Oregon grown and processed foods\, two dollars of economic activity is generated in the local economy.

SUMMARY:Visual Artist Performance
DESCRIPTION:Interdisciplinary artist Beca Blake will make a performative art statement about intersectional identity in the post-pandemic era from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday\, June 29\, at The Gallery @ AIFF\, 389 Main St.\, Ashland. \nBlake will be assembling\, by hand and machine sewing\, new textile art in the street front window via a mock studio process to finish Origin: Intersectional\, an identity art garment that Blake began fabricating in May 2024. \nThe garment is comprised of a compilation of references to postcolonial aesthetics on issues of identity\, authority\, freedom\, and rights. \nThis ultra-contemporary art practice functions as a spark to ignite critical thinking through creative engagement\, dialogue\, and cultural activation in the post-settler social constructs of rural Southern Oregon. \n
